I'm sure this has been asked before but I thought I would ask it again for my own reference...

I own a TomTom Go 500 and I'm very happy with it. Buy and large it does everything I want it to do and I even play around customisising it from time to time.

In fact there are only two things that really anoy me about it, one is that the map I got two years ago is now out of date and at £40 a pop this is quite an investment.

The other one is the pre-loaded POI files that come with the supplied map. As with the map these appear to be very ot of date and I can't find any way to edit them.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to edit the shipped POI files and do new maps come with said files?

Thanks for your time

Wayne

That is the general consensus.

It is possible to back engineer the POI File, POI.dat, but it's something I wouldn't want to undertake.

This is the reason that most users prefer the custom POI Files. A good collection of which can be found HERE.

Richard's POIs are free.
The only source of maps is Tom Tom at your aforementioned £40 a pop, although after two years, that's not a huge fortune compared with my now unused collection of paper A-Zs and atlases. Take note that the latest maps might be as up to date as you would have liked them to be when you first bought your GO500 two years ago - it usually takes at least that long to convert tarmac to maps. Do a Search and read all about it.

Thanks for your help answering this.

I've downloaded a few POI files already (and even generated one of my ownfor CostCo locations) already, I just find incorrect POI locations annoying. I guess this means that I'm a bit of a tart!

Does this mean that if I delete poi.dat the preset POI's will dissapear?

I guess I'll also have to bite the bullet and buy a new map too, but that can wait 'till after pay day.

If you're no great fan of updating, check your firmware version (tap bottom right of screen) v5.xxx had a pretty low limit on the number of POIs you can install - 39, if I remember correctly. v6.xxx upped it to 100.

A Tip, dont remove poi.dat just rename it to poi.dat.old it will not then be used, it then remains there incase you want rename to reuse and rename to original
