I believe the best distance is what your own driving capabilities are but these are a guide
Speed Limit in MPH 30 Sec warn 20 Sec Warn
80 1173 782
70 1026 684
60 879 586
50 732 488
40 588 392
30 441 294
20 294 196

i.e speed 30 secs 20secs |

Have a look at the user guide Here towards the end is a look up table containing the distances required for various durations in time for warnings.
The figures in the above post will be in Yards, and these are the figures you should enter when setting up your warnings - Mike |

Sorry but I can't reproduce the table.
I think I'm being thick but can someone please clarify what the figures mean? 
Are the figures in the columns under the times the yards travelled in that time and at that speed? If so, which column should we be using to set the warnings?
With apologies if the answer is obvious

Effectively yes.

Depends how much of a warning you want!! Look at the speeds down the side. Decide how much warning you want across the top and where the two meet you get the distance to set the alert.
for example: To get a 20 second warning of cameras set at 30mph you set your warning to 293. You have to repeat this for each camera category and speed as shown in the table at the bottom of the mikealder linked to above. You might want to set all the speeds to 20 second warnings or vary the distance so that different speed and / or camera types give you a longer or shorter warning.
Bear in mind this is the speed that the camera is set to and not your speed. If you approach a 30mph camera at 60mph, with a 20 second warning, you'll only get a 10 second warning (because you are travelling at twice the speed limit).
