Hi Dave - thanks for that, unfortunately I can't see these files in the place you said I should look! All the downloaded postcode files are in File Exlorer - My Documents.

You need to make sure any POI files you want to use with TomTom are stored in the same folder as the maps are installed to. This would normally be on a storage card, so use the file explorer to browse to where you installed the maps, look for a folder called something like "Great_Britain Navigator Map" then copy the post code files to this directory. Then start navigator and tap anywhere on the map screen and select "nearby points of interest" you should now be able to scroll through the list to find the POI type you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Richard,
Many thanks for your advice.
Well I have copied all those post code files into the folder "Great_Britain Navigator Maps" which are indeed on my SD card. Have then loaded TTN2 and tapped on the map screen, clicked on Nearby POI and went thru the list - there is no "Postcode" category there - should there be? Or am I totally misunderstanding this - am I right in assuming there will be a list of postcodes for instance WA53JL which I can click on and TTN2 will work out a route to this address?
Forgive me my ignorance!
Cheers

Tom

Hi Tom,

If you downloaded the post code files from the PocketGps site then you should have 2 files for each post code district, a .bmp file & a .ov2 file. If you have copied these files to the map directory on your storage card when you look for the POI from within TomTom it will appear in the list exactly as it is named on the storage card i.e NR_Anglia. This POI file will contain the postcode data for the NR area which I believe is Norwich.

I find it better to use codesearch for the ppc as it is much quicker to locate a postcode and when you find the code you are looking for it is entered into one file which you can name as you wish which makes finding it within TomTom a whole lot easier.

Hope this helps

Richard

Eureka!!!
Well I deleted TTN2 from my Ipaq and SD card and reinstalled the whole thing and have just loaded one of the postcode files and it's all there in POI - brilliant - I have just picked out a few random companies from my local yellow pages and used just the postcodes and true enough TTN2 given full instructions to each address. i don't know why they were in POI before but never mind they are now.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Cheers Tom

Hi,
I also found that the POI`s dont show until you have GPS connected.

i.e i have gps in my car, but not activated when using cradle in house etc.

I loaded some poi`s onto my map folder, and no matter what i did they didnt show, i thought i had done something wrong.

As soon as i got in the car and connected my gps and received a signal, low and behold the poi`s i had put into the folder were showing on my poi list.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Nick

I tried to load all the postcode files onto my 128mb SD card where the full TTN2 GB maps sit but was unable to do so as I filled up the card. Today I bought a 256mb SD card - I still can't load them all!!
I have been copying them in batches of 10 onto the card and the absolute maximum I can put in is 173 of the files - if I put in 174 then I get the error message "Too many POI files: loading aborted" coming up on the Ipaq screen when I tap on TTN to load it.
I have tried this whole procedure twice from scratch and same result both times - anymore than 173 of the files and the same message!!

Anyone have a solution?

Cheers

Tom

Hi,

I'm also looking for accurate postcodes centred on Telford, Shropshire.

There are also some mapping errors in the region and road name misspellings (ie Okehampton Road is Oakhampton Road on TT2)... probably due to the expansion and constant build of new estates in the area.

I might add that the same is true of the Bespoke Mercedes system when I took out a demonstrator with COMAND recently. Laughing

Another oddity... my road says 'No house numbers' on the address searches and find.... but they DO come up when you click on the map !! Rolling Eyes

As a GPS and PDA noob, I'm also looking for any recommendations of sites for POI downloads and PDA games. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thumbs Up

seems to me like the postal code search isnt that clear...

i would expect it to allow me to add a post code into the city/street etc and it show all the streets within this post code.

i then hit the first letter of the street, and it should show.

sorry if im going over old ground, its just that i havent used the postal code bit yet (if its there)

Cheers
Nick

Hi,
When you download the file from the web site it's a zip folder, do i have to unzip it before putting it on storage card, or do i put the folder i unzipped it to on the card.

Thanks Tony

Hi Toytown,

Unzip the contents of the zip file , and move them across and put them into the Great Britain Maps folder on your storage card where your maps are located.

RichDems comments:
You need to make sure any POI files you want to use with TomTom are stored in the same folder as the maps are installed to. This would normally be on a storage card, so use the file explorer to browse to where you installed the maps, look for a folder called something like "Great_Britain Navigator Map" then copy the post code files to this directory

yes its the zip file contents that need moving not the actual zip file

Regards
Nick

I totally agree Nick. Which is why I've written my own application which looks up postcodes in a compacted and indexed version of the codesearch files from this site, and hooks into tomtom to navigate to the location.

The lookup for this application is virtually instant, with the entire UK postcode database (about 12MBytes) stored on the SD flash card where the tomtom maps are stored.

I am intending to make this application available to others but it's a bit rough round the edges at the moment... not enough hours in a day. I am also still working out how to recover my investment in the tomtom sdk.

Nontheless, I would like to offer support to your call for tomtom to incorporate it properly. Perhaps they could do that at the same time as releasing up-to-date maps, eh? Just don't hold your breath, guys!

I've download your UK postcode App, but unfortunately it fails to install. I run the Setup.exe, the Add/Remove Programs box kicks in, it retrieves data from the PPC (Ipaq 2210), but does not bring up the Location Install box? Any ideas?

telb,

There's been quite a bit of chat about this in another post on this forum...

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6061

I would hazard a guess that you've already got CheckPOInt installed on your unit, in which case you don't need to run the setup.exe at all. You've already got the files installed that you need. Try simply copying the .exe and .dat file to your storage card and run the .exe, as per step 4 onwards on my site.

Sorry my instructions are not that great. I am working on getting a proper install procedure put together. Just need a couple more hours in a day and I'll be there! :D

If you're still having problems, please post on the thread above as I am only really monitoring that one at regular intervals. There are lots of people there who have got it working and are happy to help.
