Hi,

I'm off to the states next year, and I want to take my trusty I3 with me. I've looked around the forums for good advice on installing USA maps, but the results are sometimes incomplete or conflicting. One gem did turn up, this website

http://www.provantage.com/garmin-map-chart~110GRMM.htm

which has City Navigator maps at what seem very reasonable prices i.e. just under £80 including UK shipping. They have two DVD versions, and one on SD card. Which one do I go for? Is it easy to get the maps onto my I3? I know I need to get a new micro SD card, anything else required?
Anybody actually done this?

Thanks

the usa maps on the micro sd card will probably be the best..if you get the dvd ,you will have to buy a card to load it on and if you're not technically minded then that might be a problem...or you could consider buying an i3 over there for about $230 ish ...or get a latest version metroguide and use metrowiz to to upload the maps giving you autorouting..

Hi Zogman

I'm OK on the technical side with PC's generally, and I have a blank micro SD card. The USA map on the SD card is $40 more than the DVD's, which was putting me off a bit. Does using Metroguide ($73 on Provantage, about £37) and Metrowizz give you all the functionality of the City Navigator?

I'm a bit tempted by the $230 for a USA I3, thats about £117, and I would have a spare I3 then. Could I legally get a copy of my UK map onto it when I get back home without further expense?

metroguide/ metrowiz combination , i believe has a slight problem with roundabouts (hope someone can verify this) but as the usa doesn't have many roundabouts a cant see it being an issue..your uk i3 card should work in the usa i3..i have a spare uk card and have used it in other i3's so i cant see a problem ...you cannot make a duplicate of your original card, some peeps claim to have done it but you will need to do a search to find those related threads..

Whilst in the states, this is pretty good value:

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4232209

I paid a similar amount in sterling...

I3 easily swaps between cars/hire cars. No tell-tale round marks on windscreen. Lift off dash for easy programming / rerouting.

Hi gilesme,
Yes, I've seen these on accessory websites, and I was wondering exactly what they were for. I presume it's to do with the Californian thing of not being able to stick things to your windscreen. I ususally use my I3 attached to my side window (athermic windscreen, can't be bothered keep plugging in the aerial), and I'd probably do that in the USA as well.
On the same Walmart site, check the prices of the I2 and I3 - both about the same price (duh?) and both about £122 - it seems we get the better deal over here, although they get more map info (bigger country, see). If they were £30 cheaper, it'd be well worth buying one.

As indicated, I've got one of these.

Showed it to my teammates who also got KwikSave I3s at the same time. They've since got one each too !

Remember, WalMart tends to show NET prices, so you could have an extra 6% or so on top, depending on State Sales Tax.

If you want to run the risk of being pulled by the cops use the OEM supplied mount, simply put, it is illegal to use a windscreen mounted device in parts of the USA so alternative solutions have to be found - Mike

But it'd be OK on the side window?

I've just bought the US maps on microSD card for my i3, will be arriving in the next few days. I'm a bit of a newbie, does anyone know what the procedure is for installing them? Do I simply inset the card into the i3?
