Hi Gang.
Just joined, and already looking to pick your brains Embarassed
Joined another gps forum a couple of weeks ago, but its as slow as hell !

right, hope this is the right section.....................

..........I currently run a tom-tom 500 for road mapping/navigation, alongside a Magellan 315 GPS reciever for off road location and grid ref checking.

Having just changed my vehicle, i want to replace both with a unit that will do both jobs, i.e full on road navigation as the tom-tom, and having the ability to pinpoint my position [like a gps reciever] in National OSGB grid refs when off road.

Whats out there?
Doesnt need full "off the road" mapping, just able to give location in OSGB.

Someone told me the latest tom-tom's will give location, but only as lat/long readings, not OSGB. Is this true, and if so is it possible to download something to change it to OSGB.

Thanks for your help.

Do you want it to record a track as well as osgb position?

No, just be able to take OSGB ref to confirm my position on broadsheet maps.

Thats the idea [though that grid ref seems to be a digit short]

Do all the Garmin nuvi's do that, or is it one you have "modified"?

Someone told me the nuvi 610T did this, but when trying one out in a store, the "trained" assistant wasnt able to find it, and didnt know if it could !

Or you could nip into Halfords and tap in: Where to/coordinates/format. and it should give you all the options available

Funny enough it was Halfords i was in !
Their muppet.... er sorry... "expert" tried this, but could only seem to find OSGB settings as a destination to go to, as opposed to a current location.
May try a different store.

Have you considered the PDA route it can offer the sat nav via TomTom or other navigation software.
For OSGB coordinates there are various software applications available some offer just the coords others can take scanned maps and show present position on the map, some are free programs others cost money.
If you use a mobile phone consider one of the devices from t-Mobile like the MDA Compact - III or O2 XDA Orbit as these have buile in GPS. The PDA route suits some but not all, the major benefit is the range of software available once you have such a device, as a phone they can be larger than some, but for versatility they take some beating when combining on road nav with off road walking.

As you said earlier you were considering new hardware so this is a new avenue to consider, unless you really want a PNA style unit

BTW you have the same options for OSGB on the Garmin 310, but I cannot see a way to get it to corrolate to true OSGB on an OS map, the test I just did was a third of a mile out of position, so I think there is something else wrong here - the Garmin shows the correct position on its map, but when I check the reported OSGB coords in Memory MAp it is a considerable way off target - Mike

Edit once to add 310 related text - Mike

Sorry out of focus:Selecting Format in the fist pic brings up the second one.

Cheers Dave, i'll check it out.

Hmmm, worry what Mike says about not being an accurate reading? Are all Garmin's like this? I ask because i know two people that use Garmin hand held recievers, and both are a fair bit out on a map compared to my magellan 315 [which is always spot on]

I would go with Mike sugestion on the Smart Phone route which in my opinion is the best solution for Sat Nav in the future as nearly every one carries a phone and will cut the thefts of PND's from cars ,I have picked up an old SPV C500 and have Tomtom installed and it is excellent ,the only downside is I can't use it with MM off road but that may change at Xmas with a few well directed hints Wink ..I have looked at the XDA Trion Which I could use with my BT Q818 but the performance of the receiver while superb on the road is a bit erratic at walking pace so would favour one with its owm Sirf III .
The Nuvi does have an off road option which I suspect is a feature to stop it snaping to the nearest road when walking .
I will sit a couple of units side by side later today including my ipaq with MM and see by how much the reading differ.

Right, i think PDA is the way to go, and stick Tom-Tom 6 on it.

This MIO 350, good unit?

What other software will i need to use it as a hand held GPS reciever to check location in OSGB?

Any [free or cheap] off road mapping i could also use on it?

Can i use an external aerial with this if req'd? [my motor has heated front screen]

Are they about 500 yds/metres out predominantly in one direction If so all GARMIN are doing is converting the basic WGS84 datum lat/long position to OSGB references. They should also change the datum to be OSGB Airey Survey 1936. This would make it accurate.

It seems a trivial mistake for GARMIN to make - given their pedigree with hand held units. The error is enough to make navigating to an OSGB grid ref. tricky in a built up area - you would be several roads out.

I will try my 660 side by side with my GPS60 tonight. All my GARMIN handhelds report the same OSGB reference at home - and this matched the ref on the 1:2500 (yes - not 1:25000) map I have of the house. 1:2500 is needed for planning submissions.
