As this concerns many different software packages, and isnt just about smartphones, I thought Id post it in here. Apologies if wrong.

Now Ive been to tomtom (who dont seem to be able to answer questions), nokia (who pass the buck to route66), route66 (who pass it on to nokia), and various other places.

Hardware - I have a Nokia 6110 navigator. Brilliant bit of kit.

I also have a mio 186 (I think) which is running tomtom5.

I bought the 6110 as a replacment for the PDA, as the PDA is never used except for satnav, and I dont take it everywhere. Obviously, I do with my mobile.

The problem -

The 6110 comes with route66 software, and I have the lastest maps for the UK on it. Unfortunatly, its crap. And I dont say it lightly.

Out of 10 postcodes which I know exactly where they are, it only got 5 right. The others were way off, quite often the other side of town, or in one case worse.

tomtom 5 (which has much older maps) didnt have this problem.

Next, the routing is insane. Ive used it from work to home, home to my parents - an hours drive - and various other routes, and all vice versa.
It fails misrably, in one case it told me to go the wrong way down the motorway.

Again, tomtom didnt do this.

Next is the fact that the instructions are just not right. It keeps telling me to bear left/right when theres no turn, or just a little corner. And then it misses telling me about proper turns, even though they are on the map.

Now I have checked all the options, and its setup fine. In fact, identical to my tomtom settings, as I have had both running at the same time to do comparisions. Toll charges, method of transport, quickest route etc etc.

If it was just a bit worse, I wouldnt mind. But its to the point I dont trust it at all. So I have some questions Im hoping someone can answer.

Can someone give me a list of all the satnav products that work with the N95's internal reciever? (As its very likely it will work with the 6110s). Please dont include any software that needs a dataplan, like wayfinder.

Can anyone get tomtom to work with an internal reciever on the symbian operating system? Tomtom refuse to tell me when they will support it, or even if ever.

Can anyone say if copilot is any good? They support the internal reciever but I cant trial their software. I dont want to buy if Im getting another route 66 type thing.

My utter ideal is to have tomtom on my 6110, as I already have a licence (the PDA came with navman which I can put back on) and its proven to be by far the best Ive ever used. Even with old maps.

Before anyone says, I dont want to get a BT reciever, that defeats the whole object.

Many thanks!

There are only the Nokia phone network based applications which charge you for each route as far as I am aware. The Route66 solution is an additional purchase option and must be a 'special' for use with the 6110.

TomTom doesn't use the internal GPS on the N95 either. Don't know about other 'mainstream' apps. It may just be a case of waiting for the developers to catch up with the technology.

Interestingly, even thought the 6110 is an S60 Series 3 'phone - it's not on the TomTom 6 support list - I guess this is just because of the lack of support for the internal GPS.

I guess this is the problem with trying to use edge-of-development products - you have to wait for your favourite apps to catch up.

Yeah, thats my thinking. However, tomtom doesnt even support the N95 (unless its very recently been added), dispite it working - many people run it with a BT receiver - and running S60. The N95 has been out a while now.

I assume its as you say, because its not working with the internal yet.

I was kind of hoping someone on here had hacked it, so they could use an internal one. As far as I can work out, its not that much of a change, its just missing the option. I will just point out I have a full licenced copy of TT, Im not trying to get a dodgy one. I *want* to use tomtom software (which Id have to pay to upgrade to ver6) but they are making me look elsewhere.

Or at least a date for TT bringing out a compatible version. Copilot and many other GPS apps can use the internal receiver on a S60 device (viewfinder for one).

Was a bit much to hope for really. I dont want to lug my PDA around, and I need to sell it anyway. But I dont want to get rid of it till I can trust the software on my phone. Catch 22 really.

So if anyone knows anything about tomtom releasing a version/patch for the N95 (because Im fairly sure its the same GPS chip as the 6110) then please reply to this thread.

Id settle for just a rough date! Sad
