I am thinking of buying the Tomtom XL Europe.
According to Tomtom website this device does not appear to have an sd card, therefore is it possible to expand the maps to cover say USA. or are you stuck with it as it comes out of the box?

The XL doesn't have an SD card, but it does have a slot for one. Hence you can buy your own BUT you can't use the internal and SD memory at the same time, so if you want to use an SD card you need to put the application files on the card, too. A 2Gb SD card will accept the 1Gb WEU and 1Gb US & Canada maps along with the application and voice files. A 1Gb card with just the app, voices and US map will suffice but you'd have to remove it every time you wanted to use the WEU map and replace it every time you wanted to use the US map, probably turning the unit off and on each time, too.

If you can afford it, almost undoubtedly. Text to speech, built in FM transmitted, new application and maps straight away along with MapShare, hands free car kit, bluetooth file transfer, 2Gb memory, etc.. And you can use both types of memory in tandem, at least on the 520 I'm testing.

Cheers, I hit the big 40 mark in August. Think I will be asking everyone for cash towards this, better than socks!
