Hi, I'm a bit new to this stuff but I have a MIo 168 with TT Nav6 on a sd card.
I'm finding that when I am driving the Arrow seems to be playing catch up all the time. EG if I turn when requested, I can be 50 or so yards along the road before the arrow shows my position again. This seems to be happening all the time.
I have fitted an external ariel to the gps flap on the Mio but it doesn't seem to make much difference.
Any advice would be vey wellcome.
Regards, John

John, How many POI files have you got enabled - try disabling all of them and use the Warn When Near POI option as this will free up the device to refresh the screen more often - Mike

You will also find some speed benefit if you fit a 150 x SD card

The 300MHz processor is the minumum required for TTN6 so in addition to the above suggestions, make sure you have no programmes running in the background. Also go to Settings-Connections-Beam and un-tick the box.

Failing all the above suggestions there is another option of changing the $trings using WinCE, which when I had my 168 made a big difference, although evidently shouldn't have. Only go down that road as a last resort.

What's your source for this?

It was on the TT site when I was thinking of updating to TTN6 but the Mio P350 wasn't show as compatible.

The reference to 300MHz minimum requirement no longer shows but they do say...

TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 includes a number of new features that greatly improve the product.
Unfortunately, these features require more memory and processing power when compared to NAVIGATOR 5 and MOBILE 5.

In addition, TomTom now offers many new maps, which are bigger and more detailed than the old maps. These maps also require more memory and processing power in the device.

Owning a Mio168 I would agree that it is just adequate for TTN6, and personally I would not consider going on any slower processor. Having used it for over 2yrs I am still satisfied with it, but off course would prefer a faster unit by choice.

I just found something I had written in a previous thread. It was for the Mio P350 but one or two things are different on the 168 so I've changed them here.

Quote:
Get WinfastCE1.3, (it shows as 1.1) which has the addition of a Save facility which enables you to print the data (see below) from http://www.leadtek.nl/nts/uk/index.php?pageid=2&dl_id=146

DON'T mess around with the SiRF settings.

You'll find your default NMEA settings on the Mio 168/P350, when checked with WinfastCE, are GGA 1, GLL 0, GSA 5, GSV 5, VTG 1, MSS 0, User 0, User 0, User 0.

Start WinfastNavigatorCE, before you do anything else tap on Tools - Port Setting and select NMEA - SP2- Baud rate 4800, then OK. This will start Winfast running.

Tap on Tools - Command - NMEA and change the settings to: -

GGA 1, GLL 1, GSA 1, GSV 5, VTG 1, MSS 0, User 0, User 1, User 0.

Tap on OK.

Go to Tools - Command and untick the two boxes then OK.

Now go outside under a clear view of the sky. You should start getting locks quite soon.

Tap on View - Signal Level where you will see details of Sats and their position, and whether locked or not.

Tap on View - Development and you'll see the data being received. (Which you can save with Winfast 1.3 by tapping on the 5th icon, floppy disc. I save to SD Card.

To stop the program. make sure you go to Tools - Disconnect, then Tools - Exit. DON'T use the 'X' top right or Winfast will not release the port and TT won't work.

If you have an athermic windscreen, Peugeot, Citroen, Renault will have, then it's best to get a lock outside the car, once done you can set up inside and everything should run fine.

The $trings are as follows GGA = (GPS fixed data)
GLL = (Position Lon/Lat)
GSA = (Active Satellites)
GSV = (Satellites in view)
RMC = (Minimum Data required)
VTG = (Course and ground speed)
MSS = (Beacons)
User
User (This user on mine results in a $GPZDA showing every second. ZDA = Time and Date). e.g. 15:09:09.000,25/09/2006
User

All the above $trings are transmitted every second except GSV which is every 5 seconds.

Here is a 5 second period taken from mine.

Notice the 3 GSV lines appear during the 5th second? e.g. the 3.1 is line 1 of 3

You'll see that GGA and RMC gives you Time and Latitude/Longitude.
GLL gives Lat/Long and Time. Therefore GLL is only duplicating GGA and RMC.

The middle User if set to 1 gives a ZDA $tring of time and date but you get the time and date in GGA and GLL and the date in RMC. So required strings appear to duplicate each other with some information, so maybe TomTom actually needs/uses the GLL data and maybe even the ZDA. By activating them it can do no harm, if the data isn't read, or needed TT will ignore it. With that in mind I chose the above mentioned settings.

I find that TomTom v6 runs pretty much identically to how v5 did on my Mio 168. The version that ran the smoothest and fastest was v3 but that is a lot older of course. I do find that I now need to use my external roof mounted antenna to get a consistent and decent signal strength. I have run all my TomTom versions inside a Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi (1996) and Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SXi (2003) using just the integral GPS flip up antenna, but this works very poorly now so the external one is a godsend.

TomTom v6 works reasonably well on my old Mio 168 but by the time v7 is out, I hope to have a new PPC.

I had the same problem with my Treo and TomTom Navigator 6. I reformatted the SD Card (4GB) as stated below and it has been running great since.

From the Treocentral.com forum:

"Very important is the cluster size of your card. You will get the best results with the following cluster sizes. Use the DOS box for formatting your card. I`m using a Transcend 4 GB / 150x with best results (16K), even with big Western Europe map.

Less than 4 GB (FAT16):
2 GB SD (SanDisk) FAT16 mit 32K: format X: /FS:FAT /A:32K

4 GB and more (FAT32):
4 GB SD or SDHC (Transcend) FAT32 mit 16K: format X: /FS:FAT32 /A:16K

"X" is the drive letter."

Hope this helps.
