Ran into an oddity today. Travelling with an ETA of 6.50 which suddenly jumps up to 7.15 because of traffic ahead.

When I ask the Nuvi to avoid the traffic it gives me a warning along the lines of "Your route is already optimised for shortest travel time. Are you sure?". Being bloody-minded I say yes and the new ETA is 7.00!

So I don't get it. If it was already going by the optimal route, why does it acknowledge that the route that avoids the traffic is quicker? Also, under what circumstances does it automatically route around traffic?

Oops, can't seem to edit posts here. If I was awake I would have mentioned originally that it's a Nuvi 610, in case that's important.

There are many factors which may have caused this to happen, so it's difficult to work out, however, the difference may have been caused by changes in the traffic data.

It doesn't. If you have have full traffic information before you plan a route, it will automatically route around the traffic if that shortens the route. However, once your route is planned, it will not automatically reroute, although it will keep the ETA time adjusted for traffic. In this scenario, you get a red triangle on the screen which allows you to personally choose what traffic to avoid and not avoid on your route.

It doesn't automatically route around traffic? That's very confusing given that the avoid traffic error I mentioned above tells you that the route is already optimised for shortest time!

Thanks Swing.

Ah well, what it does do is in the background is constantly searches for a better route - should a faster route be found, due to traffic, or just circumstance, it will offer you a choice of changing your route to this new faster route (the same red triangle as before, but with a curvy road inside it) - when you say yes, it will then select the new, faster route.

So, it's not technically lying in that it does ensure you are on the optimised route (as best it can work out at any moment in time), but it does not truly (in my opinion) automatically reroute, although it will automatically offer to apply the reroute (if you see what I mean).

To reawaken this old thread, I think that it does sometimes automatically reroute.

This weekend I was on my way down to London from Wales via the M4 then the M25, ETA 10.30. Suddenly my ETA went up to about 11.15 (with no traffic symbol being displayed). Then 11.30.

I was saying WTF and then the ETA dropped to about 10.50 and the Nuvi had me come off and go via the North Circular instead. It did this without *any* user intervention so it seems it does re-route in some circumstances.

I was driving (obviously) so couldn't futz with the unit to find out what had happened on the M25 to make it reroute.

It won't automatically reroute around traffic, unless you go off the prescribed route. At that point, the new route will allow for traffic.

Does it avoid congestion when planning a route? I.e. if you have the unit on and it has TMC info doesn't it take this into account when planning the initial route.

It will, but only if it has the traffic data before you plan the route - I don't receive traffic until after I've left my house, so I already have the route planned, which will be a non-traffic aware route. My Nuvi will now not automatically reroute based on traffic unless I leave that route, or request it to recalculate manually.

swing - Thanks.

I have only just (yesterday) been getting TMC info at home - I thought that was how it was supposed to work.

I can't explain what I saw then. I was on the M25 so it seems doubtful that the GPS misread enough to think I was on a different road, but it did happen just as I described above.
