Am I going mad
No, don't answer that
I recently updated my speed cam database and I've now driven past a few 'new' cameras.
However, the Mio tells me that they are mobile cameras (which they probably are because there's no fixed camera) and that they monitor cars from all directions (the four pronged arrow), but they have no speed limit indication.
If I "Edit Cam", the Mio only allows me to change the type of camera and direction of attack - it doesn't allow me to edit the speed.
The "Add Cam" option still allows me to specify camera type, direction of attack and speed - so why can I not add speed information with the "Edit Cam" option?
I could go to the trouble of deleting these cameras and adding new ones in their place, but then the next time I sync I'll probably be in the same position.
Has anybody else encountered this problem? _________________ Andy

PS that should have been SPEED camera, not SPPED camera - dyslexic fingers...
...and it's the MIO database, not the PGPSW database. _________________ Andy

Change made. ;)

I’m afraid that I don’t know the MIO camera database. Have you tried the PocketGPSWorld camera database? If you do find any irregularities you can log them via this site and get them sorted quickly (provided of course that we can get it quickly verified).

The thing that put me off the PGPSW database was having to play with 'transfer hack' once the databse had been downloaded.
I didn't want to mess anything up and the Mio database should just download and work...well, that's the theory anyway. _________________ Andy

I can understand your caution, but perhaps the 'transfer hack' is badly named. It's a perfectly stable program which is alleged to have been released to a Mio user by someone at Mitac.
It's certainly more trustworthy than the Mio camera database!

If I add a new speed camera and enter it as a mobile camera, I'm able to give the camera a speed limit. However, when I the approach this camera, no speed limit is indicated and if I choose "Edit Cam", I can change the camera type and direction, but there is no option to edit the speed for these cameras.
Also, when setting the direction for cameras on the Mio, the arrows shown do not always match the direction of the road or the direction of travel in relation to a compass. In addition to this, two speed cameras along the same stretch of road heading in the same direction can give completely different directions when adding or editing cameras on the Mio. For example, near where I work there are 2 cameras close together and one gives an option of | (vertical), whilst the other is -- (horizontal), although the compass direction of the road has not changed.
Often, when entering what appears to be the correct direction of travel, the opposite of what seems to be the logical choice is required to obtain the true setting.
It appears, therefore, that for many cameras, the only easy way to ensure that the camera is detecting the correct direction of travel is to choose the 'all directions' options - which defeats the purpose of having a speed camera heading setting on the GPS unit.
With the mobile speed cameras in the database, there is also no additional warning if you are travelling above the prescribed speed limit - which defeats the purpose of having a mobile speed camera warning on the GPS unit. _________________ Andy

re: mobile speeds
this is a limitation of the mio software - mobile sites cannot be set to 'have' a speed...
re: heading
if you located the relevent camera on the submission page and submit a change request with the correct heading then this will be changed

Thanks for your input MaFt.
I appreciate what you say and have submiited a few changes to the PGPSW speed camera database.
However, in the meantime, if I encounter a camera on a regular basis, I might want to update my GPS itself for my own benefit until the PGPSW database is updated and released.
The PGPSW camera submission page is EXCELLENT and probably as foolproof as it can be with a compass dial to assist with camera headings.
Unfortunately, my Mio appears to have a mind of its own regarding camera headings and the arrow(s) shown don't necessarily relate either to the direction of tavel or the compass heading.
For example, if I am driving along a road at a heading of 67 degrees and try to add a new camera, the options may be 315/135 degrees - yet a camera a souple of hundred yards up the road in the same direction (67 degrees) may be 360/180 degrees. Selecting the heading which may appear to more closely match your heading may be incorrect and it's easier, therefore, to use the 'all directions' option.
Am I making myself clear? _________________ Andy

This is another 'feature' of the Mio software. It doesn't allow you to correctly edit the direction of an existing camera. It will however correctly insert the direction for a NEW camera. The answer therefore is to delete the existing camera and insert a new one.

Thanks Sal, I'll try it that way as well and see what happens.
It's a bit of a pain though doing 150 through a 30 limit, deleting and adding cameras in my Hillman Imp
In my experience, it takes at least 2 attempts to get a new camera in anything like the right place - but maybe it'll get better with practice.
I was hoping there was more to it than poor satellite reception and maybe you have the answer. _________________ Andy
