I have tried downloading the poi's and putting them in the folder 'UK_and_IE_plus_major_roads_of_WE' but it doesn't come up on the map still.
There is already a folder called POI in this folder.

Is this the correct way to do it? I also tried putting it in the tomtom folder, still no luck.

Did you unzip the download before transferring the files to the map folder? - for each POI file will be two independent files one ending with a file extension of ov2 (the actual locations) the other is a .bmp file which is the icon - Mike

Ok got it sorted now. I had extracted the file with winrar which didn't work.
I found out than when I had it in winrar I needed to right click and view all files, then extract all files - works fine now thanks.

Is it possible to add your own personal POI's on the map?

Yes it is possible to do this on the unit, but if you have a lot to enter it is far faster to use excel to create a spreadsheet then convert the data to the ov2 format using POIEdit - Mike

First of all select Change Preferences/ Manage POI select ADD POI Category and give your POI category a name also define the marker you want to use from the selection available.

Use change preferences/ Manage POI /add POI - select the category you want to add the point to then select Address / Post code (or whatever method you want from the available options. - Mike

You need to create a category on the device BEFORE trying to create a POI - note you can only add to custom POI files the inbuilt categories are fixed and cannot be added to - Mike
