I have a 3630 and navman 3400. As I live in Hungary I use a software called Aeromap for navigation in this country. The problem is that after 90% of all cases I use Smartst software, other GPS software will not be able to recognize GPS sentences but GPGSA and GPGMC. If I use smartst exclusively this problem never occurs, I get a (quite) quick fix and able to see the number of sats on the smartst screen.

If I switch to other navigation software after smartst including the Navman-made GPS Info, the other software needs plenty of time to get the fix and it will not show number of sats. I need to start up smartst a number of times, exit it, play w/ memory settings, reboot the ipaq, worship in the temple until it will recognize additonal GPS sentences.

If I do not use Smartst and see the number of sats (I use Aeromap every day) then this problem never comes. Every time I start up smartst, I know I will have to play again with the smartst to get back my sats. Nedless to say that without additonal sentences I need to wait much much longer to get a fix. Does anybody know what is the cause for this?

It is weird that you see differences in getting a fix. The only reason I can think of is that SmartST is resetting the GPS receiver, forcing a cold refresh. Normally "getting a fix" is happening on the receiver, and then you have the - completely unrelated - part of transferring certain message types from the receiver over the serial link.

What you may want to do is configure your jacket to send more than just GPRMC and GPGSA. You may also want to enable one of these: GPGLL, GPGSV, and GPVTG. There is plenty of bandwith in the serial channel to transmit these messages every second, and some of the programs (like maybe Aeromap) are expecting these extra messages to show you the number of sats in view (GPGSV) etc.

" The only reason I can think of is that SmartST is resetting the GPS receiver, forcing a cold refresh."

This could be possible, however this means that Smartst does something after which the receiver must be reset as it has never happened after using any other GPS software.

How do you think the Navman 3400 jacket can be configured to send GPGLL and GPGSV? When Smartst lets it, these sentences are also coming in, at least I can see them in the Aeromap settings screen.

I have been experiencing this for more than a year and even though first it seemed ridiculous, today I believe this issue must be smartst related.

Unfortunately I don't have access to a Navman 3400, but I would try the usual suspects - WinFast Navigator and Emtac Crux_View. They both can program receivers, but they work with different chipsets.

Maybe someone els in the forum has an idea?

By the way, did you know there are Destinator maps available for Hungary? They seem to be pretty decent but it would be nice if you could check them on site for us ;-)

I will have a look at these two software you mentioned, thx.

Concerning the Destinator maps:
I know about Destinator but have not tried it. Generally people who have this say, that for Budapest the map is quite good, for smaller towns it is sometimes far from the truth.

Lutz,

WinFast Navigator solved the problem. The GPS needed a Factory reset. It is working fine since then. Thumbs Up
