|
|
I used TomTom Home for the first time yesterday. I was reluctant to do so but there seemed to be no alternative. I was upgrading from TT5 to TT6 - not easy as my PDA (X30) is unsupported but I managed it, thanks to advice in this forum.
I noticed this morning that TT Home tried to automatically connect after I switched my laptop on. I hadn't configured it to and stopped it. That annoys me - that software should require users to 'opt out' rather than 'opt in' to connections.
The default setting is 'Start TomTom Home automatically when my computer starts (recommended)'; I now have it set to 'Start when I damned well tell you to!'
I see I can 'Manage photos', 'Manage music' and 'Buy audio books' - why, it's navigation software... isn't it?
What information about my computer that relates to photos, music and audi books does TomTom Home share with TomTom?
Am I paranoid or right to be wary? |

As far as I'm aware, data is downloaded from your device to the computer and is then passed onto TomTom via HOME if you agree. The data is not itentifiable to you and the information is to do with what speeds are being achieved on what roads at what time of day, I think. I understand that it's intended to help TomTom create a better prediction on journey times. _________________ Tim |

TomTom Home is universal to all the TomTom products, including the 910. This has a hard disk for storing/playing/displaying music and photos. |

? What's that got to do with the original question? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Tim,
"As far as I'm aware..." that illustrates my point. I can't find any reference to TomTom collecting data from users computers about the journeys they make.
If they are collecting data, this should be somewhere prominent, not tucked away in terms and conditions (whether it is or not I can't say, probably like most people I just tick the box that says I've read them).
The data TT is (as far as you know) collecting could be used for many other purposes than improving its journey time predictions. For example, it would invaluable to governments considering road pricing.
For the moment I'm going to continue to be paranoid and not let TomTom Home connect without my say so and even then I'll try to make sure details of the journeys I make are not disclosed. |

He is explaining the relevance of home having manage "music" "photo's" and "audio books" in its settings. And as you know the 910 can utilise all these options.

Where is this data stored? I have issues with the latest TTN6 which seem to become more prevelant over time (my phone isn't supported and has a freezing issue - M3100 on Orange). A hard reset makes things better. if memory management is an issue then wouldn't logging data on the move be creating files somewhere?
I'm not that well versed in the ins and outs of PDA operation but this seems like common sense to me. If it logs it it has to be creating files somewhere. And at no point have i seen a screen asking me if I agree to this. Not bothered either way from a privacy point of view as I'm not smuggling drugs or on the run but I would have liked to have known this was happening either way. _________________ Tom Tom GO 720
