Hello,

I am setting up a permanent in dashboard computer in my car that will run Windows XP. I want to install a GPS receiver on the top of my car (for best signal), but I can't find any that use USB. Is there anyone that can help me find a GPS receiver that runs on USB, but is designed for car mounting?

Thanks in advance.

The GlobalSat BU353 SIRFSTAR III PDA GPS RECEIVER (See GPSforLess advertising on RHS). Only 1.5 Mtrs of cable - but I dare say it could take a USB extender cable.

I wouldn't worry about having the aerial outside. Any GPS with a SiRF III chipset will work well inside a car. There are quite a few USB devices about - check the retailers advertising down the RHS of this window.

If you have an athermic screen (either heated front screen or UV reflecting screen) then you may well want to go for the external unit.

For many years I used to run TomTom navigator (from its introduction) on an iPaq using the Garmin GPS36 GPS mouse. Magnetic, rugged construction but serial interface. Very reliable piece of kit. I found it used to work very well on the boot of the car, allowing the cable to run inside the boot, through the rear seat, down the floor trim and into the dash - allowing a very neat connection to the iPaq. Also you could remove the GPS unit and drop it into the boot when parked up in public places - all to easy to nick it otherwise.

You could always try and get a GARMIN GPS18PC - it's an updated USB version of the GPS36 mentioned above. Here in the UK it seems to come bundled with City Navigator - making it expensive. But you can buy the GPS unit itself for around $72 in the US - with current conversion that's not expensive.

BTW - I DO like the new edit feature moderators - well done. Thumbs Up
