The Outdoors Show 2007 NEC March 16 to 18

Far more diverse than just GPS related would be a classic understatement, from diving, rock climbing, camping, walking, cycling even bungee jumping – to be honest the list is endless. This show has been a favourite of mine for a while, obviously the GPS related equipment is first and foremost as far as we are concerned but there is plenty more to keep you occupied for more than a day.

Below: From the show by mikealder and Alex776

===================================================================

SatMap – With a brand new device on show that really does the business not only were the public interested, so were numerous other suppliers.

This is a very well thought out device in terms of ergonomics, functionality, usability – well worth taking a look at.

For more information on this innovative product please see Active 10 for a more indepth initial view of the device.

Every now and then you find a device at an exhibition that looks great on paper AND when switched on performs as advertised - easy to use.

The SATMAP active 10 is a handheld rugged PNA device sporting Ordinance Survey mapping. Fully waterproof, integral SiRF-III GPS receiver, 3,5" colour screen (with backlight), built in electronic compass and a 50 hour battery duration. YES 50 Hours, that’s not a miss type - and its not April 01 yet......

The claimed battery duration is incredible, the user interface is simple to use, easy to learn - the device just seems natural in use, coupled with its rugged build quality and screen clarity it certainly attracted some attention on the first public outing at the NEC OutDoors Show earlier today.

===================================================================

Fugawi – New maps, but again combined with the typical archaic OS license problem, to use the new application “which has certain new features” will require another purchase of the maps at the latest standard, this could be a costly move.
IF you are considering moving to MicroSoft Vista on your Home PC please confirm you current mapping software will still work – very sound advice from Fugawi, I wonder if other software suppliers could be caught with map license issues - if you use PC based maps and you are considering switching to Vista make sure you don't end up with a PC that will not work with your existing software.

===================================================================

Memory Map – Seriously pushing the Road Angel 7000
(it was on every corner of the large display stand)

Loaded with both their topographical mapping application and the Road Angel automotive navigation package, there are more details on This Page.

This was the first time we had the device to play with. Initial impressions – well as an in car navigation device the menu system is clumsy and difficult to find your way around, perhaps over time this would become less of a challenge, but the interface needs to be more intuitive.
For the OS maps its great – just like a PDA, but the device simply doesn’t have the right feel to be comfortable in the hand, and if / when dropped I doubt it would fair to well, I have a question mark over this device, great concept but could (and should) be considerably better.

===================================================================

Garmin – Nothing new, we reckon they sent it all over to Germany for the CeBit show, although one of their technicians checked out my Nuvi 310D and confirmed there was something wrong with it and the TMC receiver so I will be arranging for that to be returned early next week.
While discussing the above problem another chap was overheard wanting to know if the Pocket GPS World Speed Camera database would work if he bought a Nuvi, his reasoning for the PGPSW database was simply , that it was his preferred choice – the Garmin response was correct, but I still wonder if they had said “No use Cyclops” would they have lost a hardware sale, with a wry smile we decided to move on…

===================================================================

Aquapac – Want to waterproof your PDA, PNA, Camera, iPOD etc

Well the Aquapac products have been around for a while, now they have a case, compatible with an audio connection that is fully submersible, to go with the case is a set of waterproof earphones, aimed at the iPOD market we decided to try the PPC phone in the same pouch and it fits, the actual cable is welded to the case to provide a true leak free cable exit.

Perhaps this can help with Mike B’s quest for under water GPS see Here lets face it going swimming with an iPOD to listen to is something different, I have other plans to put the PPC Phone in the same case and use it when swimming - the phone has GPS built in but I don't want to get it wet - if I can have music at the same time, then why not?.

===================================================================

GPS Training - Got a new toy and don't understand how to get the best from it? - well GPS training offer a range of weekend courses using GPS hardware outdoors in real world situations.

Most courses are walking related, although they are introducing a GPS based training event Mountain biking. If you don't have GPS hardware they will loan a device out for the duration of the course, a great way to spend a day out, or longer.
Contact GPSTraining via their Web site - Here

===================================================================

That’s the GPS stuff out of the way, what else – well the tent “City” outside resembled a scene from Keswick in the height of summer.

Tents of every shape and size, "smaller suppliers" were indoors.

===================================================================

podcamping
One new and quite innovative approach to camping is that offered by “Pod Camping” – this is a full turn key package of quality equipment delivered and erected for your arrival at selected camp sights – if you fancy the camping way of life for a holiday/ break but don’t want to commit to the expenditure that goes with full purchase give this option a look at.
Not only do they supply a tent of cavernous proportions, with excellent build quality.

It is equipped with a fitted kitchen (camping style) bedroom, lights even a sofa!

See the web site podcamping for further details.

===================================================================

BOAB - Included for the benefit of Darren, a nice concept if you want the tent on the vehicle.

They also supply the Oz Tent, which can be put up in 30 seconds - a great concept and so easy to use.
See the web site Here for further details

===================================================================

Ordinance Survey - Large stand with a full range of their mapping products available for sale. Also they had the facility to print maps actually at the show, so no map in the range was missing from stock!

Demonstrations and help is available for the web based map selection service, where you can order a unique map selection delivered by post to your house.

This is certainly a cheaper method when buying 1:25,000 scale maps - for the one area I ordered it avoids having to carry four seperate pre-printed maps from the normal range. This map selection/ ordering service is available via the OS Web site which can be found Here
