Hi,

My first post. First of all, this is my first Sat Nav device, bought for me as a present.

My opinion of it, is not very high to be honest. Navman software seems a bit lacking in places and also the mapping data supplied (TeleAtlas) has a lot to be desired. Both all that is a different story.

The reason for my post is these Active POI's, and specifically the Speed Camera dbs.

I am technical, so I've had no problems downloading, unzipping and saving down to the iCN 520.

The problems I am having are:-

1) Just before saving to the iCN, you get the option to tick "Active", "Visible Alert", "Audible Alert" etc. Select the bitmap, select the visibility level, and finally select the distance to POI warning. I have done this numerous times, and the software seems to save it to the iCN quite happily. No errors reported.

However after disconnecting the device, and going into the Active POI area on the 520, the speed camera POI's (speed zoned) are listed, but not as ACTIVE. Tapping one brings up its information. The "Active" checkbox is unchecked, Audible and Visible alerts are greyed out, as is distance to POI.

So I check the active box, audible box and visible box, set the distance. Tap Save.

Go back in, all greyed out still. WTF?!

2) Thinking that is was because other POI's are installed (e.g. Audi dealers, Garden Centres etc.) as ACTIVE (but no warnings set) I cleared the Active checkbox on those. Yep no longer active, but also they cannot be set back to ACTIVE.
Originally they were listed as for example, Audideal [ACTIVE]. This is no longer the case.

3) Distance to POI. On some POI files, you can manually type in a distance to POI, but on others you have to use the defaults via the up/down arrows.

4) A software inconsistancy. As mentioned in the Navman POIEdit software, you can specify a visibility level. Why on earth haven't they given you this slide-bar in the navman software on the 520?

Sorry to come across as totally negative about this product, but for me it just seems to be one annoyance after another with this device, right from day one.

Thanks

AL

Hi everyone,

After a bit more searching of this forum and a quick PM to the very helpful Tim Buxton, it would seem these Active POI problems are very common.

From what I can gather, on the 520 at least, you can have (please correct me if I am wrong):-

- 99 POI's, but only 25 will be visible on the 520. But all will actually available on the map etc.

- Of the 25, only 13 (in my experience) to 16 (others experience) can be set as active with warnings etc.

This last point totally screws your ability to use the PocketGPSWorld Speed Zoned camera database!! As there are 24 files, which all need to be active really, otherwise whats the point?

I have mailed Navman about these restrictions, but according to previous posts, this has been done before with no real help or comittment to fixing the problems from them.

So the options are:-

- Stick with Navman and use the consolidated Speed Cams
- Load up TOM TOM software onto Navman
- Sell it
- Hit it with a large hammer (would be the most rewarding option the way I am feeling at the moment) Laughing

I think a warning regarding these restrictions should be posted on the Speed Camera database pre-sign-up page. Just so people know, the device restricts you and that you won't be able to set all the Speed Zoned files to Active all at the same time.

Regards

Alan

Hi,

I have tried to upload the POI's for speed cameras on to my ICN 520. They show up and transfer across to the unit and even look as though they are loading, but they don't install.

The file I have used is a .csv file. Is this correct? Please advice if possible.

Thanks.

Agreed on all points, but as an aside I dont care what type of camera (Gatso, Mobile etc) only what the limit is. I therefore merge all the files, in wordpad, for each speed limit and load like that. This works fine and gets me round the problem caused by the active POI limit. I have also found that I have to set a POI as active when loading, the option available in the 520 menus to set as active has never worked for me.
