Garmin City Navigator USA on European GPS

Hi, I have a Garmin Legend C GPS, purchased in the UK. It comes with the European (Atlantic) basemap.

If I was to purchase Garmin City Navigator 8 USA edition and load it over the basemap, will it work on my device?

I was wondering if anyone knows if European GPS's only work with European software, cant seem to find an answer anywhere.
