Hi
Looked at the Navman site and read this

“This map update includes the very latest high-detail street-level maps of Western Europe available for the Navman iCN510 and iCN520. This upgrade provides the same map data as the Navman N-Series.
These maps are sold on CD format and will require to be stored onto a map storage card.
This upgrade only provides update maps and not any new software features.”

So it looks like they have had major problems with 2006 operating software for the 5xx. I will not be spending £99 on maps alone; I will put the money towards a new GPS even so that my old trusted 510/520 is still going strong.
Regards
DRP

Sensible, Dave!
I gave up waiting for the updated software/maps just before Christmas and got the N20 (special deal from Costco) and am very happy with it. Had some initial problems with the POIs which I hope have now been sorted but the updated SIRF software and maps are great. I can get acquisition indoors and very fast too. I bought the T1 to go with it but that did not work so that went back to Navman and I should get a replacement in a couple of days.
The point of all this is that there are some good deals around and prices falling - although your present set-up works well, that £99 for maps would go a long way towards a new, more up-to-date device and there are still people willing to pay for your present equipment on Ebay (I got £110 for mine just before Christmas).
Also, with a new device you should also get the latest desktop software too - all this assuming you are still going with Navman. Wink

I suspect like a lot of people I am just going to soldier on now with my 510/520. But I am wondering what to do when it eventually breaks. I have spent quite a lot of money on full European and USA maps and do not want to see that wasted.

Does any one know if it is practical to buy a used machine on E-Bay and then load in my existing maps or are my maps now permanently tied to my exisitng hardware.

If you are suggesting replacing your 510/520 with the same model via Ebay, then Navman assured me that your existing mapping would work. If there was a registration problem, they also assured me that they would resolve it.
If, however, you wanted to use your existing mapping with a later model then, no, they would not be compatible.
