|
|
Hi Guys,
I am trying to connect the GR-230 to the USB port and both XP and 2000 fail to recognize it. I ran the latest exe driver update from Holux, but it does not help.
Anyone have any recomendations?
I thought this GPS antenna was highly rated. So far it is nothing but headaches.
regards,
Rick |

Hi rick,
Did you buy the optional data cable ? the one that comes as standard is purely for charging it.

Is the data cable a special Holux thing?
Or will any USB-to-mini USB cable (like one for a USB hub or a Sony digital camera) work?

It's a special cable. The holux GR230 interface is actually a TTL level serial port (i.e. 3 wire RS232 with incorrect voltages being 0 to 5V instead of +-3V to 12V).
The reason it uses a mini USB type B connection is probably because it's very small. This produces a bit of confusion because lets face it, you see a USB connector, you expect it to be a USB connection. But it's not.
The cable itself has a Prolific 2302 USB-Serial converter in it (Or something that emulates that device) to do the conversion between a USB connection and the TTL serial port. The USB driver then just provides an emulated serial port (Or in the case of Linux a character device /dev/ttyUSB0 that looks like a normal tty). |

Prolific PL-2302 is a USB/USB network bridge chip (used for those modules that allow you to make a network connection between two machines using a USB port).
The USB/serial chip is Prolific PL-2303. I'm sure this was just a typo, but if people are trying to hunt down Linux drivers, it's worth correcting!
Prolific themselves have a driver download site - it has been at http://tech.prolific.com.tw. At the time of writing I can't get it to work - though maybe there are more up to date Linux drivers there (that don't cause the problem with an Oops that some are reporting).
