Is there a way to load topo maps to a Garmin nuvi 350?

Thanks

I believe that the Nuvi will accept Topo maps (although certain country Topo maps have problems with the Nuvi range). Some features are not available, and the unit needs configuring in a particular way to allow routing etc.

Having said that, I've never tried it, so don't base a buying decision on my advice!

I've used both Topo (France) and DIY maps on my Nuvi 360 with no problems whatsoever

Indeed, and that is correct - it's not designed to support them in the same way that the true Garmin GPS units are, but in most cases they should work. It is designed as a car SatNav unit, and as such should not need Topo maps.

but it is still very good for walking and off-roading (obviously not the serious anorak-and-rucksack walking, but still..), and the battery life is so much better than that of a comparable TomTom device

I understand it was not designed as a hiking unit. However I can't afford one for automotive use and a second for hiking. Its small size and good battery life make it easy to use while hiking. It would be great to add the topo info.

There is nothing stopping you from buying and installing the TOPO maps ;-)

Per an email from Garmin support "Unfortunatly Topo maps aren't compatible with the Nuvi 350, it is designed for street navigation use."

Thanks

3rd party, but you can have a browse here: http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/catalogue.php - there are some topo maps there or here http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/RRGTopo.htm or here http://www.topomaps.info/ to try some free ones. (I assume that you know how to load maps, backup your device, etc, etc...)

You can get height contours for all of the UK for free from the Scottish Mouninteering Society.

http://www.smc.org.uk/ContourMaps.htm

These work on a Nuvi, and can be shown overlaid over the standard navigator maps, and can be switched on or off as required.

I have the standard UK&I maps on the Nuvi's internal memory. I've then added the Contours via Mapsource to internal memory, and then all the rest of Navigator Europe onto an SD card.
