I doubt it is a new unit as when I turned it on to use it it said that the maps needed updating.

A unit with older maps doesn't mean that it is old as such. I bought another i3 in December 2006 and it had the older (version 8) maps installed. Requested an unlock code through Garmin's website (no need to phone them at all) and they emailed me back immediately with the unlock code and said that they'll send the DVD (but this appears to be taking some time as it is probable being shipped from the US). Once you get the code you can use it on the map that you have. I don't believe that there is a copyright issue here with Garmin supplying the maps DVD for free to anyone requesting them by email (although once again without the all important unlock code that you obtain from them only -and will have to pay for if not entitled to the free upgrade-).
