I have an HP Ipaq rz1710 running TomTom v5.210, a Custom Car Mounting Kit for Tomtom and a Globalsat BR-355 Sirf Star III wired GPS receiver.

When I connect the GPS receiver direct to the PDA, it picks up a signal and TomTom works fine. When I connect the receiver to the car mount via an RJ11 cable and place the PDA in the holder, the receiver still picks up a signal as the LED flashes but the PDA says "No GPS Device".

The strange thing is, is that if I connect the receiver to the PDA and not the car holder, after 30 secs or so a signal is picked up. If I then quickly unplug the receiver and plug it into the car holder and put the PDA into the holder, the PDA keeps the signal. If I come out of tomtom and then go back in, no signal is picked up again.

Under the "Show GPS Status" menu, TomTom is configured to use Other NMEA GPS, Baud Rate of 4800, S2410 COM1.

Are these settings correct?

I really dont know where else to go as this is very frustrating. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

your cable setup may be dodgy. Either a breakup in one of the connectors, or some other form of signal degradation. How long is the overall cable? Is it laid along areas where other devices can radiate energy in?

Also check that he RJ11 cable is designed for connection of PDA to GPS and not PDA to PC. If it's the latter the cable connections will be wrong - you will need to swap the transmit and receive wires around.
