Failing gps receivers supercap or rechargeable?

I have seen many times that members have trouble with getting an initial fix with tomtom. I once had this problem with a gps receiver which had a small rechargeable battery soldered to the cicuit board. This battery would no longer charge and it was there to provide the power to hold datum on the device so that tomtom would initialise within a normal time. I could not replace this battery so the unit was obsolete after a year. My latest gps receiver has a SuperCap installed which holds a charge and I presume it replaces the rechargeable battery used in other receivers. I have had no problems and always get a fast initial setup with tomtom. Am I correct with my assumption that the supercap replaces the rechargeable battery and will therefore go on forever or am I missing something here?

the supercap does indeed replace the buffer battery. It doesn't go on "forever" but it is supposed to last longer, and more importantly, function longer than those poor batteries.
