You can't navigate using GPS in the tunnel so why bother setting a via point actually IN the tunnel. Route to the channel tunnel entrance point and when you get to the other side of the crossing, program it to route to your destination. _________________ Gone fishing! |

By setting a VIA in the middle of the tunnel the unit will go via the tunnel for the actual route, and provide an ETA for the whole journey. |

Not an accurate one though - according to Mapsource, the crossing will take 2.5 hours - it is marked as a ferry crossing (on the v7 maps anyway). 8O In addition to that, it doesn't know how long you will be waiting for the train.
OK, it will provide a distance, but that isn't really relevant either because you won't be driving that distance.
What I do when I get to the tunnel entrance is set the location on the Garmin to Calais and get it to calculate to my destination. It will then give a travel time for when I emerge from the tunnel/ferry. Sorted.
Each to their own though! It gives us something to tinker with during the somewhat boring train trip. _________________ Gone fishing! |

Thanks KMbee for pointers and suggestion. Will try next time but am sure it will work given your experience.
The reason for doing this Skippy is as Swing says - it gives a reasonable approximation to eta and distance, and even if the tunnel transit/waiting time is not accurate it is no worse than the estimates based on ferry crossings which the Nuvi otherwise uses.
The version 8 maps show the channel tunnel crossing as a rail link not ferry link. |
