The TMC signal should be carried by GWR and Captial FM radio groups (plus a few others), which includes Classic FM

As far as I've read, the messages appear as a list in the TMC screen, they don't actually interrupt routing unless your route is in a problem area.

That's right. If there is a holdup ahead on your route you will hear "route recalculation" (if you have set the preference for auto recalulation)

As you say, the license would be paid by Mio not by us.

The licence fee is included in the purchase cost.

I hope Mio/whoever can clarify our position in the UK.

Here's a reference to the TMC networks that shows which broadcasters transmit each of the two TMS services:

Mio uses Trafficmaster.

According to the dealer, a lifetime subscription to the TrafficMaster service is included in the purchase price of the TMC receiver.

I've gone back to the dealer and asked why the system doesn't appear to be locking on to signals like the User Manual indicates and I've also contacted TrafficMaster direct to see if they can shed any light on this saga.

No radio station information is given and no Traffic Events are listed - and that's despite a closed motorway intersection (M3 joining M25) earlier today.

Despite 'TMC Present' being displayed, the data doesn't appear to be decoded as it should be.

According to the TrafficMaster web site:

"Trafficmaster provides the highest quality traffic information available within the UK. This is encoded in full compliance with the TMC Standard and then broadcast over the RDS FM sub-carriers of our radio station partners."

So if they're using the FM service, Mio products should still decode the data.

I'm not sure I've cleared anything up!!

...I've got a couple of e-mail addresses for Mio, so I'm trying them to see if the almighty product support can shed any light on the situation - that is if I even get a reply!!!

The latest from Mio:

"Dear Sir,

The UK has a payable TMC-service network, our current TMC modules supporting free TMC services in the rest of Europe.

This is clearly mentioned on our web site.

However, we are currently testing UK TMC adapters which price will include license fee for UK TMC.

We expect to have them available in 1 month, depending on the test results, it can be earlier or later.

Best Regards,

Mio Technology Europe

Mio Support Team"

...so, basically, they are distributing and selling a product (the current TMC receiver) which they know will NOT work in the UK - a case for Ttrading Standards I think, since this item is clearly NOT fit for purpose, whilst dealers are being led to believe that it WILL work and Mio are still working on a receiver which WILL work in the UK!!

I can't see it being a hardware thing though.. A TMC receiver is a TMC receiver is a TMC receiver. The license comes restriction comes from the software.

I know this because the Navigon 4 we had ran perfectly with this TMC receiver.

Anyway, whether it's hardware or not, I've returned my TMC receiver for a refund 'cos I'm fed up of being messed about and not even Mio can give the same answer twice.

I'll rely on the radio traffic bulletins and a few good traffic web sites instead.

If it came to organising the proverbial in a brewery, Mio wouldn't have a clue where to even start!!!!!!

The latest I have from Mio is:

"Dear Sir,

The receiver was provided to English distributors and dealers because there was a demand coming from the UK market, mostly from people travelling to the continent frequently.

If there are any restrictions in the use of a certain accessory or device,
this is always mentioned on our website. If it is sold in a shop, the shop
personnel should always mention this to the client. Unfortunately, we cannot always control whether this happens or not.

We can however offer you a solution to your problem: we are testing the UK application of this accessory as we speak, and should have a final working version ready on short term."

...no mention of cost or subscription fees for this new module though

You seem to have success in getting answers from Mio. Perhaps you should ask them about the v3.2 postcode issue!

Hi

I have a C210 with a MIO TMC adapter also a friend that has a C510 with the same adapter, both are running V3.2 but neither picks up and TMC messeges.

Mio have told me they are working on the problem and the units may just "start" working or there may be a further software update.

Mio are right on saying the the UK is a subscription based service, and that this is in writing on the website, however if you go to

http://www.mio-tech.be/products/personal_navigation_devices/c210/coverage.php

it says that TMC is available in the UK

Regards

Peter

Well, I think it's the threat of Trading Standards and BBC Watchdog that gets them worried!!

I sent them a VERY strongly worded message asking why the hell they are distributing and selling a product in the UK which they KNOW does NOT work in the UK - at best immoral...and possibly bordering on illegal.

I think I just know which buttons to press in order to get a response.

I have already posted a similar message on another thread earlier, but i too have a c510 and the TMC module/antenna does work. In fact i have just driven back to London from Weymouth and it operated just fine. At one point i had 16 pages of traffic jams etc. and when i hit the M25 it recalculated the route twice due to said traffic jams. I even get the occasional voice message (female but sounds Americanised so not sure if it is Phillipa) saying 'traffic jam ahead'. Out of interest i bought mine about a month ago from Easy devices.
