I have a GTM-12 which hardly works.

Does anyone have experience of the other (older) versions called GTM-10 which links to the vehicles ariel and the GTM-11 which has a short stubby ariel rather then the long thin one the GTM-12 has.

I'm following the other topic re all the problems people are having but can't see any "success stories" from users of other versions.

Are they all a bit duff ?

First of all - which car charger do you have? If it's 10R-02 6017 then the car charger may be the cause of your problems, and you need to contact Garmin and ask for the 10R-02 6025 car charger.

Until the Nuvi 310D, which ships with the GTM12 in the box, Garmin traffic units were quite rare, hence why you haven't heard much about them. The GTM10 is much more reilable, but then it has the advantage of a permanent connection to the car aerial. Some early GTM11 users found they needed to connect to their car aerial too to get sufficient signal. Of course, whether those users might have benefitted from the now available newer car charger we might never find out.

You may think (from the Garmin website) that the GTM11 comes with a stubby aerial, but it's actually 9 inches long!

Thanks for the comments.

Is it worth returning the 12 and sourcing a 10 instead?

If you can live with the permanent nature of the GTM10 as opposed to the GTM12, and will be happy that you won't be able to quickly swap it into another car, then you may well find it a better solution.

Thanks Swing.

Does that mean the "internals" of the GTM's are the same whether it be a GTM 10, 11 or 12 and it's just the ariel and fitment that differs?

I am guessing so, but if no-one knows I'll ring Garmin and ask them.

It would be easy for me to fit a GTM 10 as I have an old car with an easily removable radio.

I think the internals of the GTM10 and 11 are identical. I think the GTM12 is an improved design to be more portable, and better suited to easy movement from vehicle to vehicle. Whether anyone is better or worse than others at picking up a signal I do not know, although the GTM10 (or GTM11 if wired correctly) connected to a car aerial should provide the best signal reception - whether it is a whole magnitude better than the GTM12 only someone with experience of both could really comment...

So - any GTM10 UK users out there - do you get signal at all times, or does it drop as you travel around the country?
