One of the otrher drivers where I work wants to get a SatNav system but doesn't have a home PC. Does anyone know if it's possible to get a system pre-installed or do you have to have a PC. I don't really want to do it on my machine as I already have 2 PDA's set up on it already.

Cheers

Some retailers may offer a pre-installation service, but you really do need a home computer, if it's not to load different maps onto the device you will need it to apply patches.

Even the dedicated systems like Garmin Street Pilot's and Navman's iCN's will require PC access.

The only way you could get away without a PC would be to go for one of the £1500 dedicated in-car systems which are updated via CD Rom.

Unless of course he has a friend who can help out occasionally? In that case a StreetPilot or iCN630 could fit the bill. Even a PocketPC once loaded with the relevant software and maps would only require access to a PC very infrequently.

With a sufficiently large storage card he could backup the device onto the storage card so that even following a hard reset he would be able to retsore from the backup independent of PC access, great if you're on the road when it all goes wrong!

Good point Darren. That's why I wondered if you could get it preinstalled.
Once it's up and running you very rarely need to sync it other than for other applications.

Don't forget that it's not necessary to set-up a partnership to install software and upload maps on a PocketPC, all that can be done as 'Guest' Happy

Talking to some of the navigation software vendors I got the impression that before long we will see SD cards on the market that have the QuickStart already on them, as well as some maps. (Similiar to what CoPilot offers today for a DIY). Once this becomes a reality you don't need a PC any more - just put the SD card into the PDA, quick install and off you go...

And all credit to Aldi/Medion for selling a pack in this way. It's the first complete bundle I've see that can be bought, installed in the car park and up and running within 5 minutes Thumbs Up
