|

Hi there,
I'm a little lost when it comes to finding a device that I think must exist, so I hope you can help me!
I'm after a GPS device that can track where it's been for a time period of approximately 24-hours and then you can download the location data preferably in an editable format. Battery powered, as the users will be on foot.
I'm organising some live events and want to be able to track teams as they complete tasks, so that at the end of the event, I can show where they have been and how long it took them to do what they did.
The sports devices seem like the obvious choice, but can someone recommend to me the name of the type of GPS device I am after or several products to go and check out?
Cheers! |

I have an old (very old) Garmin unit that I used to use when I did a lot of hill walking. It will keep a 'breadcrumb' trail of where it has been for later review. A couple of problems in respect of your request; the unit is no longer sold, I doubt the batteries would last 24hrs, the data isn't downloadable and the memory for storing the trail is limited so that new data will eventually start overwriting older data.
Having said all of that, have you tried looking at more modern devices that are designed for walkers or for orienteering. They may have some if not all of the features you are looking for. |

There are a number of reviews on the site (Lutz has tested and written the reports) of equipment that can data log relative to GPS positions, if you are thinking of equipping a number of groups or people this will get costly have a look at the following links for some ideas:
Wintec
Deluo
Delorme

Most cheap handheld GPS (Garmins in particular, like an eTrex) can do it. The problem is that batteries cannot last 24 hours. If changing batteries in the middle of the trip is not an issue then you do not have problem. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Thanks for all your comments guys, it seems that the features I need are
* Automatic tracking
* Data cable functionality to get tracking data onto a PC
Looks like the Garmin Geko 201 is the cheapest model to do both of these features, so I've just scored one from Ebay.
Thanks again! |
