I had reason to telephone Garmin today and, while chatting to the Product Support guy, was told that the i3 is no longer being made. Apparently, in order to satisfy demand in the UK since production ceased, the’ve had to get units in from France and change the software.
He said he didn’t know why Garmin have decided to stop producing the i3, and I suggested it’s such good value for money, sales of higher spec, more expensive models have been hit. He was non-commital on this!
He thought Garmin were likely to support the i3 for 5 years or more.
There’s a new Nuvi due out soon (I think he said the 660?) with v9 mapping. He didn’t know when the updated maps would be released for existing models, but speculated January.

thanks for the info anita....the i3 has been a great success for garmin ...and at £99 ,a good buy for us....garmin flooded the market with this budget sat nav and are probably hoping that people that brought the i3 now want to upgrade to a more feature listed and more expensive model ....dont think the i3 will die just yet..

| What an odd device! It has wireless FM transmission of the voice prompting, which at the moment precludes it from being marketing in the UK and Europe until that silly law is changed. What is not clear is if this is the *only* method for the audio to be heard. If it is then it means you can't listen to your normal car music and the voice prompts at the same time. Unless, again, it has an RDS data stream in the transmission and can interrupt your normal listening programme with a traffic alert and then give the prompt, which would be an interesting approach. It is also over US$1000, so I don't think it will replace the i3 somehow. |

It's certainly out of my league, and I don't want the bells & whistles anyway!
If I had to replace my i3 now, I'd be looking at the lower spec Nuvis and the TomTom One.
But hopefully I won't have to make that decision for a very long time!

Very true. The i3 was a great intro into GPS for me but I have also since purchased a Quest for use on the bike. I got fed up with using a plastic bag in the rain and not having the ability to plot routes to follow the exact roads I wanted. Something of a bargain at £130 on eBay especially since the previous owner didn't bother to register it so I now have latest mapping as well at no extra cost.

The latest updated TomTom One would be my choice likely to be a higher price when it hits the shops, the current TT1 is being heavily discounted to clear the decks.
Garmin in my opinion have blotted their copy book with all the duff firmware releases and the Halfords nuvi with the traffic module which by the number of posts does not work and garmin are clutching at straws to get it to work (ferrite rings, double insulated cable) how on earth did this manage to get to the market place. |

My i3 is one of these French units. This explained the reason why I was told I had unlocked the maps for France when I registered my i3 on the Garmin site. Fortunately, it was the MicroSD version and not the newer inbuilt memory version too. |

No such luck unfortunately. Was told by Garmin that the unit had been re-programmed for use in England. I only have some of Northern France. |
