I need the most inexpensive model of GPS devices and software that allows me to do the following:

In the morning put the GPS device in one of my trucks, in the evening pull it out and upload the trip information to mapping software. Then I need this mapping software to show me where my truck stopped (the address), how long it was there and everywhere it went and those routes until it returned.

The idea is I will hide this and it will automatically log everything without user intervention while it is out until I get it in the evening. Then it will show me on a standard map on my computer everywhere it went.

I imagine I just need some sort of GPS logger but the interface can be very basic as long as the mapping software can handle the data and format it into regular maps.

I don’t want some expensive fleet management as this is just for a lawn mowing business. Anybody have any suggestions?

We will be posting a review of the Deluo BlackBox shortly, this device may fit your needs. It is a GPS data logger that can be controlled via BlueTooth or serial port, and it produces an output format that you can then use with your favourite PC mapping software.

One of the other BlueTooth GPS receivers does also have data logging features, but I am not sure about the programs used for visualisation of the data.

You could of course get a cheap Garmin an eTrex or a Geko 201 and set it up first thing in the morning and retrieve it at night. You can then download the track data and use this in conjunction with a software mapping application such as Memory-Map Navigator, or Maptech Navigator to determine the route taken, and the length of time stopped at each location.

Beware of and take advice on privacy issues if you intend to use this in any legal proceedings.
