Hi I’m wiring my GPS in the car but the supplied lead is some what short, how do I go about extending the lead! Can any one recommend a supplier?

Also what is the drain on the old battery if I hard wire the GPS to a always live feed?
Cheers

If you are referring to the 4pin RJ11 lead that connects the GPS receiver to the 12v adapter junction box then I think a fully wired RJ11 extension cable available from most computer outlets will do the trick. Don't buy any longer than you need though as signal drop could be an issue over long distances.

I just picked up an RJ11 Modem extension cable from PC World... The cable works fine and cost about £7.. However the shortest length they stock is 5 metres...

RS232 works fine over 5 metres, only the data goes over the cable, not the GPS signal, so it doesnt affect the sensitivity. Might improve it if you find a better position for the GPS.

The GPS uses a couple of hundred milliAmps and will drain a car battery in a week or so, probably quicker if the car has an alarm. Better to connect it to something that is wired with the ignition key.

If you use the car every day, the GPS stays up to date and doesnt take long to reacquire when it is switched on, even if you dont use TT all the time.

First thoughts are either that the internal battery that stores the almanac and ephemeris data in the GPS receiver has failed. How old is the receiver?
