Help-Avoid Highways does not work!!

Hi All,
I did a search but could not find the answer to this question,although I'm sure its here somewhere.

I recently came from the most westerly point of wales back to bedford,and being a sunday night wanted to avoid motorways as m4 and m25 would be at walking pace.I ticked the avoid highways box and it made no difference at all to the route.I even shut down/restarted the thing as well, but it still tried to get me onto the motorways!!even changing fastest to shortest route made no difference.
Any reson why?am i doing something wrong?I hve the latest poi's and cmersd loaded onto it.bought brnd new a month ago
I am considering selling my i3 cos of this and getting a tomtom500 which avoids motorways when you tell it to, and gives you traffic updates.

Maybe there was no other route available without going so far out of your way.

The feature worked for me Friday night when the M62 was closed and backing up, it took me down from Bolton to North Manchester via Kearsley, Whitefield, etc no problem. It tried to direct me once to the motorway but I ignored it and continued on an A road.

Yes, remember that the 'avoid highways' feature is not absolute. The i3 will only obey under certain parameters. I must say I do think that exactly what those parameters are ought to have been made transparent and indeed user alterable.
