Is there a way of improving the GPS reception on a navman PIN without installing an external aerial?
Thanks

There has been talk as far back as last December on a firmware upgrade for the MIO 168 (AKA PiN100/300) although there is no official announcement on this.

It is reported to improve time to aqquire a fix and dramatically improve sensitivity
You can read more about this on the Expansys forums and also a discussion here so you can make your own mind up if it is worth the risk.
A link to the firmware update is here should you choose to risk it.

Good luck.

Hi Ian

Hmmm.... Not quite sure what to make of the postings on the other forums. It would seem that everyone had a good experience with the firmware update until recently then everything went pear shaped. The last two postings on the eXpansys forum don't indicate what original firmware they had, but the previous postings all have the same firmware as my machine.

Also some of the comments on XTrac indicate that whilst it is more sensitive, there could be delays in ongoing postitioning due to it searching for more (but weaker) signals.

I am very new to all this, what is your opinion. I only use the GPS in my PIn/Mitac for car navigation, but I am frustrated by the software's inability to get a fix in some places and the length of time it takes to get an initial fix when I switch on.

I just got a Navman Pin. I followed the instruction and flash the GPS firmware. It update the GPS from II to Xtrac. Using as car navigation is so much better: it locks much faster than before and I have a signal in my house that I could not before. I have no difference in my office with concrete wall: both case no signal.

At least in my unit I can revert back and forth on II and Xtrac by flashing either r01 or r03 firmaware: so you really are not losing anything by trying.

My 0.02

The Firmware Version on my Medion 95000 says

2.4.13.03.10-MitacR10-XTrace2.0.3-C3PROD1.0

and my Mio 168

2.4.12.09-XMitac-C4PROD2.0 0000003729*76

So what does that mean then.

I am considering the new Pin570 as an upgrade to my old ipaq3970 & 3450 GPS sleeve.
The updates you are referring to in this thread - are they on the new Smart ST 2005 by nay chance/
