Haven't you read my post above (mean that in a nice way...). The combined TMC/GPS receiver are in existence and have been in use for a while!
Ah, yes, I hadn't read it correctly as I noticed the lack of UK support and didn't realise it was a combined GPS/RDS unit.

but unfortunately the uk pocketpc maps are currently lacking the information to link the two together....
I believe that both the main suppliers of map data for the Sat Nav units have modified their data to support TMC, so I suspect if the developers of the PocketPC versions wanted to support it, they could with the raw data they start with (as they normally use the same dataset, although to keep the size down I suspect right now they throw away that information)

Are you sure Navigon don't have UK maps, I thought the Aldi PocketPC offer was for a re-badged Asus PPC running Navigon Mobile Navigator software?

If you look at http://www.navigon.de/english/content/navigationworld/produktmatrix/index.html# you'll see that the product with full European maps doesn't have RDS-TMC support, whereas the Busines product with RDS-TMC support only covers part of Europe.

Apologies, I meant to say no UK-TMC compatible maps just like Alturion.

How do you know that it is running Navigon? That is quite an unbelievable offer!!! I noticed on the Navigon web-site that they do similar offers which include a GNS combined TMC/GPS receiver...

The picture @ aldi suggests it is an Medion. Is that the same as Asustek? Would love to learn the details...Maybe have to take a trip into Aldi...

Having looked at the website, this does look very interesting as a combined unit.
Now, if only:
They also supported points of interest with speed warnings, or
TomTom supported their hardware (and updated their data)
I'd be more interested in it Smile

I can't be sure it's Navigo but it looks very much like it. It is a Medion branded PPC but I'm assured it's an Asus/Mitac clone.

It is a pretty good offer but they rarely have many units available and it's an unknown quantity. if anyone does grab one we'd love to hear more about the package though!

If I grab one, I'll post my experiences here...

Now if only I already had Satnav with the Aldi POI I could find my way to a store Laughing

I was in Aldi in Luton today...they wouldn't let me have a look at the box as the offer doesn't start until tomorrow...They have 30...

However I also found a lot of info on this set on German forums, and personally I do not think this Aldi set is good value for money. The software is not the TMC ready version, the receiver is not a combined TMC receiver, the Medion AKA many other OEM models is quite old-school, no POI integrated nor supplied as it is a 'light' version....

Same old story, cheap will be expensive in the long run...

May suite some people, but not for me...

I guess you do get what you pay for. There are good offers to be found on decent hardware and software once you shop around, but nothing available that cheap. A decent package will set you back just under £600 but will probably give you a much superior setup.

Traffic Message Channel - it's a method of broadcasting traffic info (roadworks, accidents, real time traffic info) via a radio frequency. In the UK ITIS Holdings provide this information via the Classic FM transmitters.

In reality, this means for a lot of single DIN SatNav systems, they need to be tuned to Classic FM or they don't receive the information, whereas the more expensive units with screens use their own radio unit to receive, allowing the car radio to be tuned to anything (also the single DIN SatNav systems cannot normally reroute unless the Navigation CD is in the CD slot - so without a CD changer you're pretty limited to Classic FM)

However, one of the devices under discussion is both a GPS and RDS-TMC receiver (ie it has a small radio built in too) and hence can provide the PDA with both a location and real time traffic information - the problem is that the PDA maps don't support TMC data for the UK yet.

Thanks Swing. Sorry about that. I was too excited to hear about aldi bundle discussion and didn't realise it is on the subject title. Thanks though, I have learnt something new today. I think I can go home now.

Thanks, Rich

Swing for what it is worth. I think it is a very good explanation. I also liked how you explained the difference and potential drawbacks of some of the lower-end systems.

Well done... Thumbs Up

My main problem is I've yet to find the perfect system for me Sad

Although I think TomTom Navigator 2 with TMC support and speed camera databases (configured to support towing) would be the ideal right now (I'd thought an Origin B2 with NMEA output would have been a nice idea, but the lack of TMC makes it not perfect)

Now, to get TomTom to add TMC support, and the speed camera databases to support towing (which really only affects the 60mph cameras on single carriageway roads)....

Ah well, my lowly Garmin III will serve for now.

That is exactly why I still haven't bought anything. I used to have a full built-in system in Holland. But I don't want that anymore, to many different data-entries. PocketPC with TMC support in the UK would be perfect in my book so at least I can have for once a single address book and drive to those addresses...
