I can live without instant fix Smile
But it would really be nice if the quite large drifting error that the sirf III has was looked at by holux.

What is this list of "suspect 236-6xxx serial numbers" and why are the suspect?

The reason I ask is that I have bought a GR236 from HK which works fine in MNEA mode but in SiRF protocol mode it will only communicate via the Holux USB dongled cable. It will NOT communicate via bluetooth(BT) and this gives the impression that it is "dead in the water".

To use it via BT you have to switch back to MNEA mode using 'Action' menu in SiRFDemo and connect via the USB cable.

Is this a known fault and have I got a suspect serial number (62401063)?

(My firmware is GSW3.1.1TO_3.1.00.07-C23P1.00.)

Welcome

I think the only reason why they were suspect is because of the old firmware. Since yours has the new firmware and you have the cable to upgrade it anyway, there should be no problem.

As for SiRF mode not working, are you sure the baud rate is correct? The GPS unit and the Bluetooth unit are discrete modules which communicate via internal RS232 serial UARTs.

In some units you could change the serial port speed on the GPS UART so it would no longer match the speed of the Bluetooth UART. If you did this then you couldn't talk to the GPS via Bluetooth, though since you have the Holux cable with the serial to USB dongle in it, you can change the baud rate to match the GPS output.

I think this latest firmware prevents you changing the baud rate to avoid mismatch problems but try setting the baud rate to different speeds and see if that works (38400 might be the one).

Also try SirfTech on your Pocket PC, this works fine on my 236 in SiRF and NMEA modes.

Good luck!

Thank you Skippy for your reply.

You are absolutely right. If I specify a baud rate of 38400 instead of using the default baud rate everything is fine.

Thanks once again

That's the version I have.

You can get the version using SiRF Tech on your Pocket PC.

You have to switch to SiRF mode first though and doing this over Bluetooth risks setting the baud rate wrong and making your GPS stop working so I don't recommend that you do it unless you also have the special Holux serial cable (not the same as a normal USB cable).

Confortable to do it via bluetooth but better safe than sorry...

There may be third parties that make them but I'm not sure. I got mine from Holux...

Hi Xman,

You're very unlikely to get the cable from Maplin. It's not a "simple" cable, it includes electronics to convert from USB to "RS232" protocol with "CMOS/TTL" levels (which are inverted relative to normal RS232) on a Mini-USB type B plug.

A supplier of the cable (although I haven't purchased one myself) is Clove technology.

Cheers, Alan.

GPSforLess have had to return my faulty Holux GPS236 (no BT after 3 weeks) to Taiwan because Holux UK have gone out of business. Anyone heard this as well?

It's been suggested here a few times but as far as I know there has been no official confirmation or denial.

When will Holux release a firmware that will actually make WAAS work? I am not talking about enabling it, which I have done using GPSViewer and Sirfdemo, I am talking about actually making it functional. I should be able to see 3 satellites, but even using an external antenna, it can't get a signal. For more on my issue, please read the following thread if you have the time.

Well after emailing Holux (Taiwan) about WAAS and new firmware, I may end up sending mine back to get the 3.2 firmware. Below is the email thread that shows the details that support told me.

My problem with GPSlim 236!!

Tried to Use Google Maps Mobile, unit seemed not to work so I downloaded SiRFDemo to try to check status (not really knowing what this software did other than show GPS activity!?).

TomTom will now not recognise it, I seem to have done something in the SiRFDemo software that seems to have completely disabled my unit. I have not tried to update the firmware either!

Well, put it this way I had not, so I tried to upload it, but still no jow (went to 100% transmit, but still no activity anywhere.)

It seems to hook up via BT OK, an does the sync spot/speed thing OK settling on the 38400 speed.

I got this unit second hand, but need it repairing - or resetting. How should I do this? any suggestions anyone?

B.
