I have owned my GO300 for about 15 months now and I have been as pleased as punch with it. It has got me to places in France and other European Countries that weren't even listed on a Michelin Road Atlas. I only tend to use the tomtom for holidays or going somewhere unfamiliar. Because of this I have never upgraded the firmware - still using 5.100 Having seen the mess a lot of forum members often find themselves in when performing one the these firmware upgrades I have shied away from taking the plunge. However, fifteen months on I'm wondering if I should now upgrade the firmware, my question thoug is this, is it really necessary? I don't use the POI's that came pre-installed and have no interest in adding any either, nor mobile phone capabilities etc. etc. The only thing I have downloaded is the speed camera database which I keep up to date. So given the above what benefits would I see if I upgrade to 5.420? Any advice welcome

It's not firmware, ok? It's the application that you are talking about. (Firmware takes care of how to control the device components and periperals)

I would guess that newer maps will not be accessible by older application versions. Another point is the compatibility with mobile phones (for the handsfree stuff).

If neither of this is a concern for you then you can leave everything as is. If you want to try it out then do a complete backup of your SD card (something you should do periodically anyhow) and then install a newer version. If you don't like it, simply restore your backup.

Sorry Lutz, application software then. I might take the plunge and see what happens. I always keep at least two backups of my card on two seperate PC's anyway so as you say nothing to lose.

Hi there again Lutz,

I installed the new 5.440 version software without any problems, and I remembered to install the new data.chk file as well. The only thing I had to do was re-assign the voices back to the various zoned cameras e.g. Gatzo 30 Gatzo 40 etc. as they every one just said "mobile" at first. Still only took about ten minutes to put them back into their proper order. Not sure what I was expecting to see but everything looks and appears to work just like before - was something supposed to look or be different?
