I am totally new to all this but the Mio C710 is really appealing to me, thanks to sallyann and the others for the great guidance. The TMC matters to me, 2 small kids in the back of the car...if you know what I mean? My car is a peugeot 206 Sport, I can't tell if the windows are classed as tinted but where does the TMC ariel go, inside or outside the car, do I need the TMC ariel?
I need it mainly for family trips and holidays is the Mio the machine for me?

I have just bought a 710. I used it today to go across to Yorkshire from Lancashire using the M62. I am very impressed with this unit. The mapping is excellent and the instructions are clear and timely. Using the suggestions seen on this site I have downloaded the UK female voice, 'Phillippa'. This was easy to do using 'bluetooth'. I placed the file in the 'voice' sub-directory. It does revert to the US male voice each time I sync with the Mio updates from the net. I can live with that, you just need to put it back on 'Philippa'.
I am now hoping to download some POIs which I might find persoanlly useful. (The ones included are not up to much in my view). I'm not sure what type of file needs to be used or where they should be placed on the 710. I'm assuming that they need to be accompanied by a .bmp file for the icon.
The TMC seems a bit hit and miss. I got 17 pages of alerts from all over the country at one point. At other times there is nothing. It did not pick up standing traffic ahead of me on the M62. I am using the external antenna. Unless I discover to the contary, I guess that the data signal needs to be strong. Perhaps I need to link it to my car radio antenna. A 't'joint and suitable jack plug should do it. I have metered out the supplied antenna wire and found that the last ring, furthest away from the tip is the (only) connection used by the antenna.
All views are of interest, this is a great place to learn from each other.
I've just tried it. Yes, it's worked for me too. Because I was already in English for the language setting I substituted German for English in the instructions. I then reverted to English after the re-boot.
I've just carried out a sync and the setiings have remained as set.
