|

I need help choosing a GPS unit.
I'm thinking of flying my paraglider XC in the UK this summer and was wondering if anyone has ever come across any GPS products that show an Ordnance Survey map, with altitude & speed on a reasonable screen. (Flying at 4000ft and trying to see a small screen is fairly hard).
I need to be able to pinpoint my position due to airspace restrictions over military bases and airports. I'd probably use this GPS unit along with a aviation map to assist me.
I then want to download the journey to a PC.
Am I best to buy a PDA with TOM TOM or should I get a dedicated GPS receiver. I've also heard that in the US they have maps especially for Aviation. Does the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) have any of these maps? Anyone know of any sites that might be able to help me?
Sorry about all the questions. I'm new to the GPS world
Thanks

The reason I want an OC map and not the normal Aviation map is because I need to see the contour lines to be able to spot lift from hills. |

You can do this with the Memory Map software (they do OS style and aviation chart maps) this software will run on both PC and Pocket PC, it is also capable of overlaying your speed/ heading Altitude etc. Although be wary of the altitude its not that accurate, and not the same as sea level.
In use I would pay some attention to mounting the device, possibly take a look at the Otter Box products, water proof and with an option for a mountain bike mount, this will probably be addaptable to fit the paraglider.
As for a PDA get one with a decent size screen, VGA if possible - Mike |

Welcome to the forums.
For the recording of the trip you may want to think about a data logger GPS.
The DeLorme BlueLogger is not the newest device any more, but it supports DGPS (for better altitude accuracy) and can store up to 50000 positions. It will also record without the PDA.
Other logging devices are available too, it's mostly a question of budget.
Can't help with the maps... _________________ Lutz

thanks mike :D
I have a Flytec Variometer which tells me my altitude so this is not too important in flight. I just wanted the altitude functionality for when I download it to my PC.
Do you think a Del Axim X3 and a TOMTOM GPS unit would work?
I plan on using a leg strap to mount the unit.
Thanks for your help and quick response

I plan on using a leg strap to mount the unit. | It should be OK as a combination, watch out for water damage, and you might consider looking for a stylus that is attached to your glove (you don't want to drop it because using a PDA with a gloved finger is nigh on impossible).
If you want to put the exclusion zones on your topo map, then it might be possible creating a route or track on the PC as the boundry of the NO-GO area, then cross hatch it with other route/ tracks, then export the data to the PPC as well as the map portion, a bit of a work around, it won't warn you of the area but you will at least see it on the display - Mike |
