I never want to buy anything anymore from them.

Here's an account of me trying to buy map and navigator for my pda for a driving-holiday in Canada and alaska.

First, I wanted to buy the navigator 5.0 and the map North america and canada.

This was not possible, I had to buy navigator, the map fo Europe (I don't need it) and the map NA&C. (BTW, this is illegal in Balgium)
That would cost me over 200€.
This took me a week to get the helpdesk to understand what I needed and to get a correct answer (got many wrong ones)

Then I went ahead and ordered the map on-line.
The order software placed my order in the account of someone from Italy and I couldn't do anything with it.
It took me another week to get this problem solved and to get the map.

To avoid any more problems I bought the navigator in a store.

I had lots of different problems installing the map of alaska and it took me a while to figure out that I first had to install a map from europe (any map), register it, then install the map of alaska en register it.
The installsets started wrong programs or crashed.
Real rubbish and a lot of work to get it working.

To get used to the interface, I used the map from Europe and did about 500km in Belgium.
I had no real problems appart from the fact that the software wasn't as good as the software I was used to (miomap), but it was acceptable.

When using it in Canada it soon became very clear that the map was totally crap.
At some points is was 100% accurate, but in about 75% of the cases it was off by between 50m and +1 km.
Looking at the trees where there was a road once, it became clear that som portions of the map are between 5 and 10 years old.
The POI's were not usable.
I wanted a restaurant and the closest one was 500km away.
Driving a bit around the area we found 3 restaurants within 5 km.
It looks as if only the restaurants in the mayor cities are present.
Same with the other POI's.
There were even a few places that weren't on the tomtom-map.

So, for the rest of the vacation we bought paper maps of Canada and Alaska and found our way.

Later in the vacation I tried again and was sent 20 km the wrong way by another mistake.
This time it was a Xroad that was totally wrong depicted.

Coming home, I told tomtom-support of the problems and wanted my money back.
They blame the GPS (witch is still working fine in Belgium) and told me:
Quote:
Our digital content (Safety Cameras, Maps, Voices, POI, etc.) is non-exchangeable and non-refundable.

So they can sell you crap and there's nothing you can do about it.

That this may be a warning to others who are thinking about buying tomtom.

A very unhappy ex-tomtom-customer

Probably not applicable to where you are, but in the UK, I would seriously consider purchase from an 'authorized' UK distributer, and then, if/when it goes wrong, you have recourse to the small claims court, (and it does work, trust me!) Whereas if you buy direct from TT in Holland...much more difficult to take legal action...unless someone knows different ?

Does that work?

I had to activate it with my PDA-ID, so I assumed it would only work with that PDA.

I'd love to sell it to you, but like I wrote, the map is totally wrong.
Only two of the major cities were a bit correct, but even at these spots, there were errors.
