Just thought I'd post a few positive comments re TomTom Navigator USA and the bluetooth GPS receiver.
I recently got an Ipaq 5550, and with a trip to the states looming, thought I'd try out the Ipaq as a navigation device. It was all very last minute (I only received the receiver and the software the day before I was due to fly out).
I was very, very impressed with this kit. It (pretty much) flawlessly guided me in, around and between LA, Las Vegas and San Diego. Reading these boards, it's evident that there is room for improvement, with some great suggestions from various people. Hopefully a lot of them will be integrated in future releases.
But now I'm back in the UK (and horribly jet-lagged!), I have one rather dumb question. Checking out the TomTom site, there doesn't appear to be a full map of the UK available (all I can find is the London city map and Scotland). Am I missing something here, or is there really no map available? |

| Gerald, that's good to hear you got on well over in the States with TTN2. Unfortunately to purchase UK maps, you need to purchase the whole software/maps bundle, totalling around £100. There's no way of just adding UK maps to what you currently have :x |

So presumably I could just purchase the GB software/maps and only install the maps (I guess the software that comes with the GB maps is identical to that for the US??)?
As you can probably gather, I haven't even got round to reading the manual yet!!
I currently have a four year old Philips Carin system in my car (with a 4 year old CD-Rom!). It seems to drop the Satellite signal quite a lot in built up areas, but manages to stay on track due to steering/speed sensors (I think there's a gyro in the unit somewhere as well). Would I be right in guessing that technology has moved on somewhat in the last 4 years, and that I'd be fine in the UK without the sensors and gyro in my Carin (just relying on the signal picked up by the TomTom receiver)? As mentioned, everything worked like a dream in the US - but their streets are somewhat wider than over here, and I'm a little concerned about performance (i.e - satellite visibility) in narrow UK streets in built-up areas. |

Hi Gerald,
I use TTN2 in a truck around central London most days of the week (when I can't persuade the traffic office to give me a break !) and I rarely have any problems with sat lock in that respect.. The only times I do have any trouble is under a thick canopy of trees or when I'm right behind another truck or a bus in a traffic queue. But then also bear in mind that my reciever has less of a view of the sky because there is no slope on a truck windscreen like a car. But all in all, no problem.

| Thanks Trucker. I've got a new car arriving in a couple of weeks - looks like I've just saved forking out £1600 on Sat Nav for it! |
