|
|
I just happened to find the new map overlay software for my Garmin M5 and I shouted with joy as I am travelling away for the next few days and really needed it.
Unfortunately once I had down loaded it all I could get was a window advising me
"The Windows installer service could not be accessed"
There does not appear to be any help/advice on getting round this block.
Please help _________________ Regards,

Ok, here's some background on this.
The map overlay uses a feature called "Windows Installer" (sometimes called Microsoft Installer or MSI) to install itself. This is built into Windows XP. Earlier systems which don't have MSI can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cebbacd8-c094-4255-b702-de3bb768148f&DisplayLang=en (its 1.6Mb). That link is for the download page for MSI for Win95, Win98 and ME. There is also a link on that page to get to the downloader for WinNT and Win2000.
Once MSI is installed on your system, it stays there and you won't get a complaint the next time you install the map overlay. It also enables you to uninstall the map if you wish by running the MSI file again, or from Control Panel/Add Remove Programs.
I'm hoping that the OP has one of these older systems without MSI, in which case the above download should fix it. Please let me know how you get on.

Sorry for not replying earlier but I have experienced a slight medical situation.
Yes thank you, it just suddenly started to work. I don't know what happened but my computer suddenly decided to download the Windows XP Service Pack 2, even though I had loaded it from disk a long time ago. After it did that things started to work properly.
I feel that this has been "one of those things" which is beyond mere mortals to which we may never know the answer or understand.
Thanks for your help _________________ Regards,

Thanks for the feedback. I didn't realise that not having SP2 would produce the same symptoms, that's useful information for the future. Glad you have it working now.
I hope your medical situation resolves itself soon 8O . |
