Rider: V3 Bluetooth Signal Weak

I have a Rider (local) running 5.42, which pairs fine with my Motorola V3, but whenever I try to make a handsfree call through the phone it connects OK but then says 'Bluetooth signal weak. Use handset?'.

The phone works fine with my Scala Rider helmet headset, and the Rider will also work quite happily with its own bluetooth module or the Scala Rider.

I've tried this outdoors, thinking it might be something to do with my wireless network, but get the same result.

Anyone else experienced this with the Rider or any other bluetooth TomTom?

It's not the end of the world on the bike, I can use the TomTom headset for satnav and the Scala for phone - I'm not interested in TomTom Traffic (it's a bike, why should I care about traffic jams?!!?) - but on the occasions I want to use it in the car (when I can get a car mount......) it'll be a real pain because the Rider doesn't have a speaker.

[edit] I'm aware the V3 isn't in the Rider compatibility list on TomTom's site, but I know that's not exhaustive so I'm looking for others' experiences. Ta.
