I will be travelling to Africa and camping in the bush. I need to buy a GPS that I could help me navigate, mark waypoints which I could use to trace my route back etc. I may also do some walking in the UK.

While mapping support isnt available in Africa and I dont necessarily need it in the UK, it might be a 'nice to have' feature. I think having a rugged device with an antenna will be important for me since I might be driving under tree cover.

I have identified the Garmin etrex Legend, GPS 60 and GPSMAP 60 with a slight inclination for the GPS 60.

I already have a Mitac Mio 168 with TT3 that I use for navigation in the UK. Can this be adapted for use in Africa by downloading some sort of software?

Any opinions on what the best choice might be?

Any of the handheld you mentioned should be OK.

The major problem is where you are going and whether you can get any map for your area.

Africa is big and you may be able get a map in some palces but not for most. So it may help to tell where you are going.

You first have to find if there is any map available for your chosen software.
You may have better chnace with OziExplorer for your PPC as someone might already have the map for your intended area of travel and provide them for download from the internet for free.
It is unlikely that you can get any map with most of the commercial software.

Garmin maps for the handheld could also be available.
Have a look at http://mapcenter.cgpsmapper.com/

I have looked long and hard for maps for Botswana, where I will be going and have consistently drawn a blank. In any case I will be in the bush where tracks, if any are changeable.

What I really need is a GPS that has a good ability to hold a signal, take a few knocks etc. Mapping will be a bonus, but is one at a cost.

In that case, any one you have mentioned is OK though the new x series may do better because of sirfIII chips. but they cost considerable (may be around $100) more.
