Hi Guys,

I'd appreciate some advice about Garmin units as being a Navman user I have very little experience with them.

Basically we've decided to get my Girlfriends Dad a sat nav for his birthday. A standard UK sat nav out the box will be great - and we don't want to spend serious money. As he will want to add Europe and South Africa maps in the future, I was thinking of the i3, since Garmin are the only major manufacturer with SA maps available. Before taking the plunge I'd be grateful on your thoughts as to whether the i3 is suitable, or if we're going to be better off spending a bit more money on a 310/320.

Cheers.

The best SA maps are offered by HandyMap, not by Garmin.

the i3 will accept any maps which come on a micro sd card, or any maps that can be loaded onto a blank card....the i3 is a good budget satnav but the more you pay ,the more features you get on the gps...it depends on how much you want to pay ............

Can you justify this? What do you mean by 'Best'. The source for the HandyMap products is old paper based maps which do not reflect reality and have never had a field visit. Garmin maps for SA are from NAVTEQ and as such have been built by driving every road. Yes HandyMap has better coverage, but Garmin have every road a tourist or businessman would need with big plans for more.

Thanks for that zogman. I did look at Handymap already, however I don't want to go down the PDA route. Providing he'll be able to upload Europe and SA maps to another SD card it should be fine.

Any ideas what size SD card would be required for both those maps?

get the map software first .....then when selecting the map you want to download onto your pc you will see the required mb's you need .........then get the relevent size card...a bit long winded but you'll know for sure what size to get...
