Hi All

Last week I sold my Ipaq 3850 GPS system to a friend and have just updated to the Dell Axim 400mhz.

Plugged it all in, programmed my first root and was met by the worst sounding voice ever!! It was like the TomTom woman had an apple in her mouth, all distorted. First thought was the unit was faulty but on turning the volume down it cleared up, BUT now it's too low to hear in the car!

Has anyone experienced this before? If this is how they are can anyone tell me what the chances of Dell taking the system back? It definately doesn't meet my needs especially as the screen doesn't show the maps that good.

Any advice would be appreciated as I'm going to call them would like some amunition to throw at them.

Cheers
Steve Sad

I have a 300mhz and had the same prob. I have a small speaker that was for using with a walkman that has an amp inside that is powerd by a 1.5v AA type battery. The whole unit is only 2.5 x 3in and works verry well when pluged into my Dell. So far the battery has been in use for 6 months. It cost me £6 from a shop on a ferry. If you go mad and use both speakers then you can use your dell for playing Mp3s ect.

Thanks Derekcon for your reply.

Just been to Maplins and bought a set of walkman amp speakers and yes you are right worked perfect.

The thing that annoyes me is this unit was bought from Dell specifically as in car navigation, so why sell it knowing that the internal speakers are so poor that it is unhearable in your car?

Again thanks for your reply. Thumbs Up

Good to see that I could help. :D
Dells speaker I think is for the "Beep`s" and system sounds only and the headphone socket was for playing music files,If they new that sat nav was going to be used by nuts like us then a real speaker and a price hike would be in order? Thumbs Up at last we win Wink

I also use a dell axim with ttn2 and at first was disapointed with the sound quality, but just by turning the sound down one segment on the volume control the sound is now ok. (that last lkevel seems to overpower the tiny speaker)

If you wanted another solution you could use a 3.5 jack to tape coverter

or a so many modern cars no longer have a tape deck i have also used a fm modulator to broadcast the sound signal to the radio (also great for portable dvd players mp3 etc)

The one i use can be found at the following link

http://www.myirock.com/players/irock400fm.asp

I purchased mine from ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3055983641&category=14980

The 300w is battery only 400w also has power supply

Hope this helps somebody

Fergy Thumbs Up
