Hi All

Is it easy to install TomTom on an 02 XDA MINI-S? And how well does it work?

Regards

Nick

It works very well from what I have seen of it, but you will need a mini SD card to load the data/ map files onto and a Bluetooth GPS unit, Also make sure you install TomTom Navigator version 5,21 (get the latest from www.tomtom.com as a download to be sure of the latest BEFORE installing) - Mike

Works fine for me. You might want to check out a tool called OmapClock which allows you to overclock the Mini S. TomTom runs fine without it, but is noticably sluggish navigating through the menus when compared to my previous Magician PDA. Here's a thread with a LOT of information about it:

Cheers for the replies. Wanted to check before i ordered, as my housemate has a Qtek S100 which has a 400Mhz clock and said it can run a bit slow at times with tomtom. So was worried with the half speed Mini-s.

Cheers again

First of all, TomTom is not programmed very well with regards to PocketPC. It has been programmed to conform to the system used by GO and Mobile etc, therefore it is very slow. If TomTom sat down and programmed Navigator from scratch then it'd be nice and fast, but they didn't, they programmed it to be compatible with the established TomTom system. This is why it takes almost every PocketPC about 20 seconds to load the thing.

Secondly, the 200MHz of the Wizard may appear half the speed of the 400MHz of the Magician, but the Wizard uses an OMAP processor, and the Magician uses an XScale processor. Two different architectures.
Think of it like an Intel Pentium 3.0GHz versus an AMD Athlon 3000+, the first is rated at 3GHz, the second is technically rated about 2.2GHz, but because of the different architecture, performs at about the same speed.

Different folks will tell you different things, some say the OMAP is slightly slower, some say slightly faster. Most programs are optimised with XScale in mind, so that can affect things. Don't worry too much, your Wizard will be fine for anything his Magician would be. And read in length that thread about overclocking - I have a shortcut set up to boost my processor speed only when I load TomTom, and it is now even more responsive than my Magician.

Hi sorry, bit of a newbie question...

I've got my TT5 on its original SD card, but my new XDA 2S mini only has a mini SD card port. Can I just copy the data from the original SD onto the mini SD or are there hidden files on the original that will need special attention?

Any information would be great,

Thanks

Simon

Simon, When you copy the original card back to the PC make sure that within Windows Explorer you have "Show Hidden files and folders" checked, you can get to this from within Windows Explorer/ Tools/ Folder Options, then select the "View" tab on the window that appears, the bit you want is about ten or eleven entries down the list - Once this is done simply insert the Nini card and copy all the data back to it - Mike

Fantastic, thanks Smile

Thats what I was planning to do, just wasn't sure whether SD cards have a special hidden folder that is inaccessible.

Thanks again

Ive had the MDA Vario (Wizard/Mini-S) about 6 months and dont notice any speed issues. As elyl states the dual core processor in the Mini-S cannot be directly compared with that in the Magician. Though I use Omap Clock I dont find it necessary for Tomtom. Probably better to use a proper closedown utility like Magic Button when exiting other applications rather than being minimised and eating cycles in the background by default.
Magic Button.

Sorry, should probably asked this on my last post...

Do I use my original activation codes to reactivate on the new device?
Or do I need to get new codes?

Thanks again,

Simon

you should be able to use your original product code but it will generate a different device code.
