Hi all, could anyone please give me advice for setting appropriate speed camera alert distances? In particular, the difference between fixed and mobile cameras. What is the range of these different camera types? I need to know how far each separate type can "see" to set my alerts correctly.

Any help/advice very much appreciated.

Thanks

I set mine so i get amble warning to check my speed and adjust according to the camera type. Fixed 30 seconds and Mobile 60 seconds (they can be pointed at you from a LONG range).

Knowing the cameras effective capture area and using it to set the alert distance isn't really appropriate as the Fixed sites have a very short capture area but you don't really want the warning at the last minute. Decide how long YOU need to adjust your driving before you get to the camera and use that as a guide. Don't forget Mobile can face forward and capture over long distances.

I set the warning for 'mobile' units at 1200metres [the M4 mobile cameras are reputed to catch you at 1000metres] and 'statics/gatso' units at 600metres.

Some time back MikeAlder jogged my brain into coming up with the following.

Mph - 30s - 20s - 15s - 10secs warning.

80 - 1173- 782 - 587 - 391 yards
70 - 1026- 684 - 513 - 342
60 - 879 - 586 - 440 - 293
50 - 732 - 488 - 366 - 244
40 - 588 - 392 - 294 - 196
30 - 441 - 294 - 221 - 147
20 - 294 - 196 - 147 - 98

I've added a buffer e.g the 30 second warning at 70mph shown as 1026 yards, is actually the distance required for a 30 second warning at 80mph, the 60mph at 879 yards is actually for70mph etc.

I still believe that this should be made into a sticky.

The times on here are very helpful

I've just re-read my post and there may be a misunderstanding. I wrote..

Quote:

I confused myself there and it's not quite what I meant.

These are the figures I recommend using...

Mph - 30s - 20s - 15s - 10secs warning.

70 - 1173- 782 - 587 - 391 yards
60 - 1026- 684 - 513 - 342
50 - 879 - 586 - 440 - 293
40 - 732 - 488 - 366 - 244
30 - 588 - 392 - 294 - 196
20 - 441 - 294 - 221 - 147

If you set the 50mph at 732 yards, top set of figures, you'll get a 30 second warning, but if you are travelling at 60mph, in a 50mph zone, you'd get less. Therefore you would need to set the 50mph warning as 879 yards.

The figures in bold, above, gives you a 10mph buffer throughout the range.

Er! Hang on..... I'll think of something in my defence....................

Still thinking........

Yes..... Er, well........ Put it this way. If everyone is 'bombing' down the outside lane at 80mph, it leaves the inside lane empty for me to 'tootle' along and take in the scenery. :D

(Pheeew! I think I got away with it).

I think paranoia rules to a point - the attached link shows you the ACPO guidelines for laser speed detection devices and other systems. Laser is by far the most common detection system in use by mobile safety vans - the maximum range they are permitted to operate at is 2000ft, although they may be capable of reaching much greater range.

As for fixed sites, they are limited to very short ranges dictated by the position of marks on the road or position of sensor loops. SPECS works on an average speed between several cameras linked in a system.

Read the policy here http://www.acpo.police.uk/asp/policies/Data/RPET%20Manual%20version%202-3.pdf

What your GPS/alarm system won't tell you is where a police patrol has set up a random check! With target aquisition of around 0.3 seconds, your alarm will often only tell you you've just been caught! Drive safely within the speed limit and none of the above applies.
