It's an educated guess based on what I have read about the way EGNOS works, my understanding of the way GPS works and my observations of the behaviour of my Garmin and Sirf II GPS units when they have EGNOS switched on. _________________ Gone fishing!

what happens if it loses the EGNOS signal.
If you lose your view of the EGNOS satellite then the GPS will keep using the last known correction data for a few minutes and eventually switch back to non-EGNOS mode if it can't reaquire the EGNOS satellite fix.
Thanks for the reply Skippy. Not wishing to sound rude , but is that statement made from an educated guess or from known information? It will save me having to wait for Garmin to email an answer (if they ever do!!).
If you want a good read on waas which backs up skippy's statement look Here The site also has lots of Gps info including Gamins secret startup commands.

Thanks skippy and oddsock. After doing a bit of further reading it appears that the unit will operate as you described - i.e. if it can get an EGNOS lock it will use the data, otherwise it will operate as normal.
I suppose the idea of the system is great, but due to the way most of us use GPS I doubt whether the unit will be able to get a good view of the EGNOS satellite for long enough to receive all of the data it needs (short of standing still in a field on a sunny day for a few hours ), and also the fact that the correction data is updated extremely regularly means you have to keep receiving it for it to be valid. I suppose it works well for aircraft though (or people that live on the top of high mountain ranges
