I'm using 5.4 on my TT300 so I can't do a POI capture, but I saw a police car with what looked very much like a speed gun mounted on its roof pointing down the road. (i.e. pointing South) The road in question is the A243 between the M25 and Malden Rushet in Surrey. There is already a fixed Gatso at the bottom of the hill pointing North.
The police car was in an access ramp to the water reservoir at the top of the hill on the North bound side of the road, the road is a 40 zone and the position the car was in makes it impossible to see until you get caught.
I use this road regularly so I'll post back with any updates.

I think you'll find this is an ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) infra-red camera. It is not used for speed monitoring, but for checking vehicle registrations against databases, for example DVLA. If your car is listed with DVLA as untaxted and you drive by this camera, the Police will stop you to check if you have renewed your tax. If not, you get booked.

Surely they'd be mounted on DVLA vans rather than Traffic Police cars.

There's a bit more to it than that. Stolen cars are on the PNC (Police National Computer). This puts markers on cars listed by DVLA. If a car which has been reported stolen drives by the camera, it will flag up on a computer screen in the car, then hopefully it will be stopped by the Police. So no this would not be on a DVLA van. Put ANPR into a search engine and see what turns up.

Just read an article on BBC web site about police checking car regs. re burglaries in Surrey, so it could have been a number check.
Just seemed a strange place for a car to be parked, they normally do that close to CWA & direct cars into the car park.

These cameras can be used anywhere. They can effectively read registration plates passing at speeds of over 100mph. In fact a camera on a Police vehicle roof, going at 60mph in one direction can read the number plate of a car going at 60mph in the opposite direction. Joe public has nothing to fear from these as they target only vehicles which have been 'marked' so to speak, if you know what I mean. Some form of known previous criminality has to be present.

This was one of those fly on the wall type progs recently. Manchester officers would sit on a bridge overlooking the M60 while the camera read the plates of all the cars that went past. As soon as it saw one which was reported stolen etc they set off after it.

A useful way of catching people with minimal effort!
