Sorry for the cross post, but I'm hoping for a quick fix ;)

Just received a 305III today and had none of the connection probelms others have had. However, I am concerned that although the unit is SIRFstar III, it seems to pick up less sats than my three other GPS units.

Also, I cannot seem to persuade it into SIRF mode to change parameters for static navigation etc. I have tried several programs on both my laptop and pocket PC, but it refuses to go into SIRF mode. In fact, it's behaving exactly like a non-SIRF receiver.

Is there some way I can confirm that the unit actually DOES have the sirf chipset and is not mislabeled?

running programs like SiRFDemo against the receiver will give you a clear indication. If the receiver doesn't react it either is not SiRF or is broken.

OK, I have SiRFDemo 3.81 on the laptop

I open the data source and see the appropriate NMEA data stream in the "debug View"

Now I select "Switch to SiRF protocol"

And I get a continuous stream of "Comm: CE_BREAK" in the "Error View"

Hmm... sounds like a serial comms error?

So I try a "Synchronise Protcol and Baud Rate" which seems to check all available baud rates, no joy. Still the same "Comm: CE_BREAK" errors.

This was connected by a CF->PCMCIA adapter, but the result is the same connected via a standard Serial port.

Sounds like it's not a SiRF chipset.

As a 305III user who has posted in these forums about issues I have: may I re-iterate that it's not the 305III I have the issue with - it works fine with all s/w apart from Pocket Anquet 6 - which I hope will be fixed in the near future :D

I can confirm that my 305III doesn't appear to give SiRF data streams either as OziExplorerCE doesn't detect any when switched to SiRF mode. OziExplorerCE allows you to monitor the data stream - what should I see in SiRF mode that would indicate it is working?

Now that's either two faulty units or the SiRF III chipset has some issues in this particular implementation.

Strange as it is listed on the the manufacuters site as:

Chipset: SiRF Star III WAAS enabled
